Today at morning tea I sat uncomfortably through a very animated and heated argument between two of my friends. They were arguing over why halal products are being sold in Australia.

The only comment I made was a question “what exactly is halal?” which neither seemed to know the answer to.

You can think of it as the Muslim equivalent of Jewish kosher.

Thank you all for answering my question. After watching the video on that website link you posted John…I am now considering converting to veganism. :bigyikes:

Halal means permitted
Haram means not permitted

Halal does pertain to foods which are allowed to be consumed by muslims, but it also pertains to their everyday actions.

Yeah. You know…I read the article…but didn’t watch the video myself.

Hi Jakasaki. Athough Halal is practiced by Muslims, they have no problems with smoking for example. How does that work?

It’s extremely similar to kosher for Jews, but a bit less restrictive. For example, if a Muslim wants some meat and halal isn’t available, kosher consistently meets all the requirements as a substitute. On the other hand, if a Jew wants some meat and kosher isn’t available, halal is the closest comparable thing but it won’t necessarily meet all the requirements of what kosher is. Some, most perhaps, but not quite all. Kosher, at least when it comes to all of its requirements being in full effect, is the more restrictive tradition.

In either case though, Jews and Muslims both have a strong preference for something that pertains to their own religion- but they do recognize the similarities and some of the shared tradition, so it’s not as if either of them condemns the other.

I don’t know Martin.

Just about all of my Turkish Muslim friends smoke and also drink alcohol.

Perhaps our Muslim posters can chime in and answer your question.

Best regards & Merry Christmas!

It depends on the Muslim and teacher/school of theology they follow, if any at all. My Muslim friends are ok with smoking and alcohol, but will not eat pork due to religious restriction. Another will not drink alcohol or eat pork or shrimp, but is ok with smoking. Another is against all of it. Another owns a liquor store and sells all of the above but won’t use it himself.

Wow. Not sure now what to think of it as in my part of the world it’s a big deal. The authorities are cautious that establishments have to careful not to offend believers, by not sticking to the stringent Halal preparation.
