Is worshiping any person place or thing other than God idolatry?
Example a sex addict is it idolatry that this person worships a creature rather than the Creator.

1.the religious worship of idols. 2.excessive or blind adoration, reverence, devotion, etc.

Going by these definitions, Catholics do not engage in idolatry.

Do you give those things the same intellectual concept or physical presence of God? If you touched the stone carved image of Christ on the Cross would you think you are touching God? The picture someone uses to contemplate during adoration or prayer is just that. Humans can venerate things just as well as abuse them but I think it is the intention of your heart regarding God whether they pray in front of a statue, painting, river or sky.

I don’t think sex addiction is a form or worship unless being an advid sports fan/player is a form or worship. God is a whole seperate category.

If the sex addict is having sex outside of marriage, then he/she is sinning. If he/she does it unrepentently, then it is mortal sin.

To mortally sin is to put SOMETHING above God as “more important” than Him.

That SOMETHING (desire?) is what is worshipped as an idol, which makes it idolatry.

Now, HOW are you going to try to use this to PROVE that Catholics are idolaters? 🙂

According to the Catachism
2113 Idolatry not only refers to false pagan worship. It remains a constant temptation to faith. Idolatry consists in divinizing what is not God. **Man commits idolatry whenever he honors and reveres a creature in place of God, **whether this be gods or demons (for example, satanism), power, pleasure, race, ancestors, the state, money, etc. Jesus says, “You cannot serve God and mammon.” Many martyrs died for not adoring “the Beast” refusing even to simulate such worship. Idolatry rejects the unique Lordship of God; it is therefore incompatible with communion with God.
2114 Human life finds its unity in the adoration of the one God. The commandment to worship the Lord alone integrates man and saves him from an endless disintegration. Idolatry is a perversion of man’s innate religious sense. An idolater is someone who "transfers his indestructible notion of God to anything other than God."

I have now read through both threads about this subject started by Hisalone. What I find interesting is the limitation of God’s ability to commune with us in whatever way He choses. I think there is a general distrust of material things in regards to worshipping God amongst many of our Protestant brethren. I say many and not all because I realize that the Lutherans, Methodists, Anglicans, East Orthodox, and probably more denominations that I am forgetting do not all hold this view.

The reality is that we are creatures of both spirit and matter. Jesus humbled himself taking on matter and elevated it in such a way that it can never be looked at the same. Why is it so hard to believe that, in light of everything we know about Jesus being the God-man, God could not or would not reveal spiritual truths through material mediums. This does not mean that it is the only way that God can commune with us, but it sure as heck does not mean that he could not do this.

What’s my point, one might ask? It is simply this: Candles, incense, holy water, rosaries, statues, stain glass windows, scapulars, etc. are just ways that material things are used to reveal spiritual truths.

**Adoration of any creature is idolatry. God is alone Adorable - He can be adored in a superstitious manner, but not idolised. **

**To treat any creature as the Adorable God is a very great sin, frequently denounced in the severest terms in the Bible, which takes a great many forms 😦 - we commit it by taking anything not God as our God. Ideas, desires, ambitions, hopes, material objects, family, country, can all become idols. **

**Veneration of the Saints as the holy & blessed servants of God is not idolatry, though it too is capable of becoming idolatrous. In the same way, to kiss the Holy Bible, or the Holy Gospel at Mass, is not idolatrous, because it is a recognition of the excellence of this gift; an excellence which comes partly from its saving power - which belongs to God alone. **

**The Human Nature of the Incarnate Word is adored because although it is created it has been most intimately united with the Divine Nature of the Word: it is distinguishable from that Nature only in thought, but not in reality; it has no “meaning” except in the Hypostatic Union. **

to add to what others have said, idolatory is when you put anything above God. Jesus says do not worship 2 gods, God and money. If money or sex or anything is more important than God in one’s life, then yes it is idolatory.

Jesus said a man can not serve two masters, because he would end up loving one and hating the other, if I recall the scripture correctly.

The addict of sex, drugs, alchohol, nicotene, or anything may be enslaved by these things he serves, but also may hate them. He may hate his slave master, but can not escape. He might say he hates heroin or alcohol knowing the damage it has caused, but does not have the power to break free.

It takes a stronger being than the slave master to free the addict from the addiction. The addict needs help to get free and needs to want to be free. The initial cause of addiction is disobedience to God’s command, as is the cause of any sin. “Whomever sins is a slave to sin”. We can be enslaved to any sin, because we lack the ability to repent. If we did have that power we would be able to set ourselves free. It is not only Jesus blood can wash away our guilt, but only Jesus can give us the power to repent as well. Repentance and forgiveness are two different spiritual things, both necessary.

We are all penitent or impenitent sinners. We are all either in the state of sin, slaves to sin, or we once were. If anyone is free then he pities those held captive and prays for them, even those who insist they have no sin. Those who are free can woship God. It is impossible to worship God as a slave to sin.

When we worship God we may outwardly bow our heads or get on our knees to pray, or sing out with voice, but the worship comes from within. It is my mind, heart and soul that bows to Him and adores, loves, thanks and praises Him. It is often accompanied with tears.

The action of loving, by its nature, can not be one directional. True love can not be bestowed on a being without its being returned. There is always a trinity, the lover, the beloved and the love. The lover and beloved exchange roles. Each is both. They are the same and so is their love.

It is quite astounding when humans find out God loves them. They think this is impossible, because they know they have offended God, insulted Him, betrayed Him, spit on, mocked, cursed and crucified Him by their sins. When they are made aware that God loves them despite the evil they do, their stony hearts are crushed by this love and they are able to return it and they do it in worship. In this they are restored to spiritual life and given and increased in grace.

We desire to please God. What Christian does not want to be pleasing to God. If we become pleasing to God what does that mean? It means He takes pleasure in us. We delight Him. We give Him delight. This is what lovers do to one another. They delight in one another. This is why we are made. God made us all and everything that exists in His good pleasure. So it is also astonishing to humans to realize they can give God pleasure. We do this through our obedience which is love.

The opposite of obedience is rebellion. All rebellion is not idolatry. Sinners, those enslaved, do not necessarily worship their slave master as an idol, but they can not escape. When the soul encounters God the soul experiences ecstasy. The experience of sex or drug induced euphoria are counterfeits in the sense that they give temporary comfort to the soul. They are traps in that they take control of the soul and the soul loses its freedom. Similarly we Christians desire to give our freedom to God. We want God to take control of our lives. He will not do this. If we are to come to Him it is always in the freedom of our will.

I agree that this is an excellent explanation of true worship.

The one thing I would disagree with is the statement “It is often accompanied by tears.”

Worship is not a feeling or emotion. It is a choice on our part to worship God. Worship is ascribing to God the “worth” that rightfully belongs to Him. There may or may not be emotion accompanying the “actions” of worship.

If there are no tears, it doesn’t make the act of worship “inferior” to the tearful worship. It just makes it less emotional.

I think we need to be careful not to assume that tears and other emotional displays indicate “worship.”

And I think we need to be even more careful not to assume that an absence of tears means that we are not truly worshipping God. This feeling of inadequacy in our worship can cause us to turn away from worshipping God because “we aren’t doing it right.” Satan would love to cause all Christians to stop worshipping God by tricking them into thinking that they are failing Him because they do not cry. Satan would also like to lead all Christians on a wild goose chase hunting down the parish (or ecclesial body for Protestants) that makes them “feel” worshipful and causing them to label as “spiritually dead” or “irreverent” all parishes or ecclesial bodies that don’t make them “feel” worshipful.

I do not happen to be an emotional person at all. It has to do with the way I was raised. (My dad used to tell us to “stop that baby crying” and in the church that I was raised in, emotions were considered “Pentecostal” and therefore were discouraged except during funerals.)

When I went to see Bridge To Terabithia last year, EVERYONE in the theater, including my husband, was sobbing during the father/son scene at the end. I wasn’t crying. I was analyzing what a great job the actors were doing at portraying raw human emotions!

I’m a bit confused here. An addiction is one thing and worship is another. Eating food is not form of worship in the same way one might worship God. Just because a person feels compelled to eat excessively and become obese does not mean that person could not have the same level of devotion to God as the person who eats less. Why would one cigarette a day be ok but not 40? Why is a glass of wine with dinner innocous but a bottle a person at each meal a drunkard?

It isn’t the act as I see it, it is the intention. In one sense I see nothing as sinfull in itself. Be it drugs or money, food or sex as examples. I don’t see the drug addict craving for the next fix as putting drugs before God, but rather having lost sight of God they seek to fill a void.

Other examples are reading, sports, education, and singing. If I am obsessed with any of those things to the point of being distracted from God in the sense I am not as perfectly devoted as Jesus while alive as a human, then any activity could be classified as serving a master other than God.

I think our human experiences become only a form of idolotry in the classic sense if we replace God with those things as being God, not just being interested or addicted to them. To me it is a different thing altogether.

Definition of Idolatry
Idol´atry
n. 1. The worship of idols, images, or anything which is not God; the worship of false gods.
His eye surveyed the dark idolatries
Of alienated Judah.
  • Milton.
2.** Excessive attachment or veneration for anything; respect or love which borders on adoration. **
By this definition, Catholics do engage in idolatry, nice try.

Who gets to decide what constitutes “Excessive” - 😃
Also note that the definition you highlighted says Excessive attachment…for anything. By this definition, anything would have to include God. Since we cannoot have an “Excessive Attachment” to God, This is not a valid definition in this discussion.

Nice Try:cool:

Well yes, we Catholics do love Jesus very, very much, and we are not ashamed to show our love via external devotions. But that’s not idolatry, is it?

Nice try, BTW. 😉

Worship is not a feeling or emotion. It is a choice on our part to worship God. Worship is ascribing to God the “worth” that rightfully belongs to Him. There may or may not be emotion accompanying the “actions” of worship.
“When all the joys of heaven come flooding into the human heart how difficult it is for that heart, still alive in exhile, to stand the strain of the impact without finding relief in tears”. Saint Therese of Lizieux
If there are no tears, it doesn’t make the act of worship “inferior” to the tearful worship. It just makes it less emotional.
Emotions are part of the human personality. God made us with emotions. They are good. There are two activities that are proper to all spiritual beings, knowing and loving. We love God in our will. We know God in our intellect. But they are connected and can not be separated. To know is to love. It is difficult to be in communion with God, to have Him enter you and experience no emotion. The emotion does not prove anything, but it is part of who we are.
Satan would love to cause all Christians to stop worshipping God by tricking them into thinking that they are failing Him because they do not cry.
There are different gifts. Not all have the same gifts.
I attend a very healthy parish and very traditional. It is our 25th anniversary. We have only had one priest in all that time. Our bishop came today to be with for the occassion. It was his first visit, being a relatively new bishop. Over the years we have done all the normal things a parish does. We baptize babies, marry, bury our beloved dead, and pray and worship together. Our bishop said that he could see the love of God in our faces and feel the soul of the parish in looking at the children and the elderly and the parents. He did not say much, but said whatever you are doing just keep doing it. It must be right. The priest stood up to speak about the years gone by and touched on the different aspects of spiritual life of the parish and the grace that has been ours. He broke down and cried.
