I know sex outside of Marriage is wrong, but is stuff like making out wrong? Kissing at all? Where would you draw the line?

Anything that intentionally causes arousal is a mortal sin. These touches, kisses, etc. are reserved to the married state. That includes passionate kissing. The only possible exception would seem to be a peck kiss, but it could not be prolonged. I wouldn’t recommend kissing someone on the first date or anything like that, though…

According to Father Larry Richards: “Nothing below the neck” … and " No, you can’t turn her upside down" (that one kills me LOL!)

Here’s a shorter version of his “Go to Confession” video on youtube. Your answer starts at 4:11 of this video.

I love Father Richards!

I think the easiest rule of thumb is “don’t touch what you don’t have” regardless of whether it’s clothed or not. That’s the simplest starting point in my opinion because if you’re at that point, you’re well beyond near occasion of sin.

I’d say if you want a bright line, that’s the brightest you can get, right?

And that video is classic. Nice.

i’d say maybe a little bit more than a peck, but i agree with nothing too passionate.

It is not about how close you can get to the fire without being burned, it’s about staying as far away from it as you can. =) I am 18, and it is hard sometimes. I understand your dilemma.

🙂 I hope God guides you well. Pray a little, think about it.

Interesting question. I’m planning on asking my priest at confession tomorrow.

From what I understand though, kissing with lips is fine, so long as you aren’t aroused. I’ll let you know what he says if I’m not too embarrassed to ask!

I recall someone once saying that a good guideline is that you shouldn’t do anything you wouldn’t do if a priest was present. So holding hands, some kissing, etc. is ok, but groping is not. I mean, would you do that in front of a priest?

Of course not 😛

But if someone does do that (either knowingly or not) would that be a mortal sin or venial? Now I’m not trying to make excuses for such behavior. I’m just curious as to what kind of sin it’d be 🙂

Any sin against chastity is always a mortal sin by nature because it is necessarily always grave matter (the misuse of the sexual faculty). The only time this isn’t the case is when there is not full consent (e.g., a passing glance or passing thought).

Consider these passages from the Summa:

I answer that, The more necessary a thing is, the more it behooves one to observe the order of reason in its regard; wherefore the more sinful it becomes if the order of reason be forsaken. Now the use of venereal acts, as stated in the foregoing Article, is most necessary for the common good, namely the preservation of the human race. Wherefore there is the greatest necessity for observing the order of reason in this matter: so that if anything be done in this connection against the dictate of reason’s ordering, it will be a sin. Now lust consists essentially in exceeding the order and mode of reason in the matter of venereal acts. Wherefore without any doubt lust is a sin. (Summa Theologia, IIa IIae Partis, 153, iii.)

But if the motive be lust, yet not excluding the marriage blessings… it is a venial sin; while if he exclude the marriage blessings… it is a mortal sin. (Summa, Supplementum, 41, iv.)

Of course, he is speaking of it being only a venial sin within the context of a husband and wife, which is what you will find, if you read the entire passage. The use of venereal pleasure outside of marriage is always a mortal sin.

So would “making out” be a mortal sin? Are pecks the only acceptable form of kissing outside of marriage?

Yes, “making out” (passionate kissing) is a mortal sin. Only peck kissing is not sinful in itself. It could still be a sin for an individual person, if it causes a misuse of the sexual faculty or because of scandal, etc., etc. In se, it is not a sin.

I like the “no touching what you don’t have” will have to remember that when my daughter starts asking questions. No genital contact was my first instinctive answer. Of note, is there a man alive who would not get aroused by a peck on the cheek, depending on the occasion? Seriously.

Below the neck and no you can’t turn her upside down…hilarious, hadn’t heard that one!

I think this is so hard for young people today because they are bombarded by sexual discussion just about anywhere they go…school, to the movies, TV, internet, etc. One way of combating the temptation, would be to spend less time one on one with your GF/BF. When you are alone together, spend the time really getting to know the mind of the person you are with, focus on determining if you are compatible, especially with consideration of marriage/children/faith, etc. If all else fails, I think they still sell chastity belts :). j/k

Spending time alone in private with the opposite sex at all (in a dating context) has always been considered sinful insofar as it is putting oneself in a near and voluntary occasion of grave sin.

That depends on the people involved. Not all human beings are incapable of managing their hormones (unlike what some over religious would like to believe).
