Greetings Eastern Catholicism Forum,

What is actually involved in making a canonical transfer from the Roman Catholic Church to the Eastern Catholic Church? I am not interested at this time in doing this, but a friend asked me what was involved, and I had no idea, so I thought to ask you guys about it.

I tried to look it up in the Code of Canon Law [Roman Rite] and could not make heads or tails of it. I got lost with sui juris and all those fancy words.

I have no idea of the Code of Canon Law for the Eastern Churches because I hear that there are several codes of canon laws for the Eastern Churchs.

Can’t one practice the Eastern Rites without having to transfer from the RCC?

God Bless,

There are a number of threads here on this topic this one being the most recent.

The Code of Canon Law *Codex Iuris Canonici * CIC is
Can. 1 The canons of this Code regard only** the Latin Church**.
(The Roman Rite is a liturgical rite of the Latin Church. The Latin Church has other less often celebrated rites, which I’ll leave to Vico to supply.) 🙂

The Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches* Codex canonum ecclesiarum orientalium* (CCEO)
Can. 1 The CCEO regards solely the Eastern Catholic Churches unless otherwise mentioned.
Some Churches, such as the Ruthenian Church AKA Byzantine Church in America, also have additional canons for their particular Church.

Yes. A Catholic can receive the Holy Mysteries of confession, Holy Eucharist, anointing of the sick in any of the 23 Catholic Churches. With appropriate special permission and proper documentation, the rites of initiation, and marriage may also be celebrated in a Church different from one’s canonical Church.

Any change of Church request would normally be preceded by several years of actively living in and worshiping in a parish of the Church one seeks to change to canonically.

Have given doggy her late night Rx and trip outside, and we can now head to bed. 🙂

Greetings 5Loaves,
