What Is It?

I have noticed that at the Daily Mass on EWTN, a small glass bowl with a lid topped with a cross is put on the edge of the altar (right side of the Priest facing forward). It is put there after the Agnus Dei.

I have looked for it at my parish during Mass and do not see anything that could be this object.

Can anyone tell me what it is? I have never seen the Priest use it, but it might happen off camera.

🤷

What was done with it afterwards? Did servers go to it, or did the priest open it?

It sounds like it could be the cruet of water…? Just a weird design? I mean, the priest doesn’t wash his fingers until afterwards…but…yeah. Do you have a picture or screen shot of it?

I do not have a screen shot of it but it is placed on the altar every morning on EWTN’s Daily Mass.

The servers place it on the side of the altar and I do notice that when they remove it they put the top back on the little bowl so that suggests that it has been used by the Priest. I just cannot see when or to what purpose.

It is not the water cruet when the Priest washes his hands because he does that with the servers still with him at the altar.

tee_eff_em, when you suggested it might be an ablution cup I “googled” that to see if the description fit the little bowl I see placed on the altar during EWTN’s Daily Mass, and I believe that is exactly what it is.

The description on The Vatican web site describes it exactly.

Thanks for that.👍
