What is "Liberation Theology" in the light of "Social Justice"?

I am very confused about Liberation Theology, the “Preferential Option for the Poor”, Social Justice, and official Church teaching. I know Liberation Theology has been condemned. But I am still very confused about what Catholics believe about serving the poor, acting in charity, and working for social change.
