What is Martin Luther's connection with the Christmas tree?

Legend has it that Martin Luther, inspired by an evening walk and the beauty of the stars, was the first to put candles on a Christmas tree. A Protestant friend of mine claims that this is false; Luther was actually meditating on Isaiah 55:1-13 when he was inspired to light his Christmas tree. Is there any relevance to this claim?
