What is Mary's role in the church?

What is mary’s role in the Catholic church? Why does she pray with us and for us? Can we just pray to Jesus?

How do I answer this questions that protestants have by qouting scripture? If i dont refer to the bible they never listen… I understand where they are coming from but i am sure that their is a way to explain it biblically to them and the importante of our blessed Mother.
