What is meant by an Indulgence?

Hello,

I inherited my Mother’s old, very huge, Catholic Bible. The copyright is 1950.

As I opened it, one of the first pages says Indulgences for reading the Bible. I was born and raised Catholic but all the things I was never taught is embarrassing. I have no idea what an Indulgence is? This Bible has a dictionary area and I looked up Indulgence, but I didn’t understand what I read. It seems a person gets these for reading scripture.

Please can you just explain these to me?
