I have never really understoof what is meant by Christ’s victory over death.Does it mean that Christ was victorious over death in that he ended all the sorrow, sadness and misery associated with death?.Does it mean that he “beat” the “evil one”? (something that comes to my mind is in “The Passion of the Christ” after Jesus is crucified how the “evil one” screams and how it was probably because Christ had defeated it).Is it a referance to his Ressurection and that ressurection being a fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy or a mixture of all the things I’ve stated?.Replies would be appreciated and thank you very much so for your time.

To my understanding it is Christs victory over Sin and damnation. We now have eternal life with Him forever.

Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs, bestowing life!
When the incarnate Logos descended into Hell and set the righteous free, rose again from the dead, and ascended into Heaven it was rendered act possible for humans with divine assistance to enter into Heaven after bodily death and have hope of the bodily resurrection, which was made human by the action of Jesus Christ.
The resurrection could only have been achieved through the His death on the cross, to resurrect you have to die first. The cross is the hammer with which death is struck down, and the key to the resurrection.

Well, the resurrection is the defeat of death for us. We no longer need to fear it or be anxious about the unknown. This life is no longer “all there is”. Sin, which is the wage of death, was simultaneously defeated. We now can be empowered, with Gods grace, to follow Jesus in fulfilling the Law (defeating sin in our own lives) and in gaining eternal life.

It doesn’t mean Christ ended all the sorrow, sadness and misery associated with death. We still grieve when people suffer and die, especially as the result of violence and war. What it does mean is made clear by His words:

“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

We no longer have to be afraid of either physical or spiritual death because He has overcome both. This is summed up beautifully in the acclamations:

**Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life

**and

**Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free. You are the Savior of the World.

**Our prayer to be delivered from evil is accomplished when we respond to His love…
