Nudity or foul language?

And why must they be banned? Not everybody is offended by it, so why must those who are not offended be prevented from being exposed to it through some form of censorship?
Foul language is worse. Sometimes it can hurt someone’s feelings.

The human anatomy is natural and a beautiful creation of God. It is not offensive [to me], but must be treated cautiously.

Ironically Yours, Blade and Blood

🙂 did not our Lord say that it is not what goes into a man that defiles him rather it is what comes out of him(words).?
did not St.Paul say to the effect that foul things should not come out from the same lips which praise God?
Nudity can be a temptation but words come from the inside.

Well, for starters, I personally find nudity more offensive.

Anything that is harmful to society should be banned. What happens when someone is addicted to pornography? They treat women differently; some become sexual predators; a regular sexual relationship is unsatisfying, thereby harming their marriage; the list of damage goes on.

Foul language is disrespectful. How would you feel if you were sitting in a diner with your 6 year old daughter and the “gentleman” sitting in the booth behind you was dropping the F-bomb? Even worse, what if that “gentleman” was your husband? Lack of respect toward others is a growing problem in society. Foul language does little to rectify this problem.

Personally I’m somewhat bothered by both, depending on the context, but I am MUCH MORE BOTHERED BY VIOLENCE than either.

Is the discussion itself an element of offense to our Catholic sensibilities? Why do we easily fall into this trap? Obviously it is titulating for this reader to see two exciting vices, discussed with such respect by such respectable trusting Christians?
If he asked what do we find more offensive: rape or sodomy, would our sensibility radar go off then? Perhaps the very discussion of certain topics on a comparative level of evil, is evil in itself. What did Jesus say,"It's not what goes into a man but what comes out in his e-mail.........

With all the beautiful words that are available in a language that can give full expression to emotions, why would one want to listen to foul language? Doesn’t make sense to me. But if you really do love foul language, I am sure there are places for you to be able to enjoy it without it having to be a part of public society. I would say the same regarding nudity.

Hi elts, 👋

I agree with you! However , when you hit your thumb with a hammer, “Gosh, that hurts” just doesn’t seem enough! 😃 And if you spill Hot Coffee in your lap “Ooops” just wouldn’t work!
Foul language is offensive! 👍 But can be very descriptive and hard to replace somes times. It should not become a habit, especially for a Christian.

I eventually at one point became immune towards foul language. And why shouldn’t I because from the time I was a baby up until now, all of the adults in my life at the very least dropped a few f-bombs here and there and it seemed that G** D*** was being more often than “I love you”. When I was very young (about 4-5), I was a bit scared of my parents, so the first time I parroted their language, under the pains of extreme punishment, I did not cuss until I was 12, when I asked them permission if I could cuss around them. I was the strange child that would rather read an encyclopedia than play video games, or even watch TV at times, so I managed to build a fairly big vocabulary that did not involve cussing. But once I started using foul language, although the change was not immediate, I eventually stopped trying to find alternate ways of expressing myself, and it became a force of habit for me to make even the sailors blush 😊 . I don’t see any terrible sin in cussing in itself, as there are times when I am so scared or so angry that I cannot reach for any other word. This is much less (maybe a couple times a week) than I used to, when it was at least a couple times an hour. I also decided that I needed to stop cussing when I really started meditating on what Romans 14 was calling me to do. I was a stumbling block to others because of my language (I once overheard someone talking about me, and one asked “How can she be Christian and talk like that?”), and though I didn’t see it as particularly sinful, the effects it caused to others was sinful. Because of that, I find it quite offensive myself today.

As for nudity, I think in some cases it depends on the culture and in what context, however I feel that it is being called too offensive, but I do live in the deep south, where I have heard people tell me I was going to hell because I enjoyed classical nudist art for the aesthetic value of it. I know of a movie or two that in certain countries were rated the equivalant of PG-13, but when showed and sold in the US, it was rated R because of nudity shown with childbirth, and it was pretty relevant to the movie as a whole. I still don’t like the idea of censorship at all, though, because of the slippery slope that it could potentially cause, but there should be a better way of giving fair warnings to viewers. I also would like to see another “wholesome entertainment” TV station or two (or three, four…) added besides Hallmark TV and Ion TV (formerly PAX). I miss, however misguided it could be at time, “Touched by an Angel”, that provided me a positive experience where I knew that I wouldn’t be surprised by any nudity, cussing, or alot of blood, guts and gore. But this is only my personal opinion.

God Bless!

I don’t find either offensive, but pornography is the more frustrating for me, because of the temptations it brings. I became somewhat inured to foul language after four years of football, but I wasn’t tempted to swear because others were swearing; I was tempted to swear because my finger got mashed on a helmet rivet.

My beagle runs around naked all day and barks. And she doesn’t seem to offend anyone…Move into humans and we type on keyboards and start threads…teachccd 😉

Here’s the first question that popped into my head: Is either one in a forum or setting where my children will see or hear it inadvertently?

I agree with something said earlier: It should be in a setting in which, if you want it, you can find it; if you don’t want it, you shouldn’t have to be worried about it popping out unexpectedly.

In the last two nights, I’ve tried watching two “clean” movies with my kids: “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and the Steve Martin version of “Father of the Bride.” Back when I watched them as an adult, I thought they were both hilarious. Watching them with my kids, I shut both off within about 20 minutes: Language and vulgarity.

In this situation, I had control. But in many social contexts, the control is absent or comes too late. Sorry, but I’m for censorship (as is everyone else, really, to some degree). My kids are more important and valuable than the problem of making some people work a little harder to get their nudity / language thrills. Why not just rent the movies if someone doesn’t like the broadcast versions?

I just realized my last post sounds crankier than I feel. It wasn’t directed specifically at Starwynd or anyone else. :o

Nudity. Most people have hideous bodies - & many are aggressively fat. Not plump, not overweight, but enormously vast.

OTOH, everyone uses foul language - say certain words a few billion times, & they lose their offensiveness. Some of them are quite expressive; & some are very old. They are part of our heritage. Besides, only convention makes them offensive.
What is it about foul language and nudity that some folks think using, or tolerating them, raises them to a higher elevation of morality. Certainly, “say certain words a few billion times and they lose their offensiveness”, lie a few billion times and lies become less offensive, at least to the lier, kill a few million people aka. jews, unborn, and the act becomes less offensive.

Large wrongs are built on small ones.

I think this is a textbook example of the slippery slope fallacy. A high school basketball player screaming the f-word as his MCL snaps isn’t going to lead to the Holocaust.

I agree with this, set the bar and then allow or ban the movie. I don’t like movies like this shown at primetime when the kids either know or quickly learn what is deleted and think that is acceptable.
I strongly and vehemently feel there should be no censorship like this period, and if you’re going to censor any part of the movie then you shouldn’t show it.

**Hi Leroy, 👋

Whenever I hear a young girl or guy say F…this, F…that F… whatever, and even worse! I always say/ “Boy, your mother must be very proud of you” I have met some of their mothers who talk exactly the same!

I was in the Army for 27 years I can “Talk that Talk”, I just prefer not to.As a Catholic, I “attempt” to be more Christ like, being human, I fail! 😊 That is why I associate with people from church, it has never happened with anyone with a religious education, catholic or otherwise!

I do not watch anything that I would not watch with my Mother, that has always been my standard. Mom, god rest her soul, would be shocked if she was still alive! Lucy and Desi in pajamas shicked her! Thank goodness they went into seperate beds! Trival: First “couple” in bed together on TV Fred and Wilma Flintstone! It almost got cut.

God Bless**

A step down in anything is the opposite of a step up.

Foul language: I still struggle with it. It would be easier for me if I didn’t hear any - and that includes the words that are “bleeped” on TV.

Nudity: As others have said, it depends on the context. Nudity does *not *always equal pornography. “I agree with something said earlier: It should be in a setting in which, if you want it, you can find it; if you don’t want it, you shouldn’t have to be worried about it popping out unexpectedly.” Ditto.

I went to a nudist camp once, deep in the Oregon woods. My mentally abusive boyfriend blackmailed me into it. I did not have a perfect body, and expected to have a miserable time.

Turns out I had a great time. Nobody else had a perfect body either, and nobody was there to stare. There were people from age 8 to “old,” from skinny to obese. I was surrounded by other imperfect bodies, and soon felt perfectly at ease in mine. That was a good thing. Poor boyfriend. He was all thwarted in his effort to humiliate me. Boo hoo!

No, I’ve never gone back. But I’ve sometimes wondered if it might be healing for victims of eating disorders to have that experience of being surrounded by imperfect bodies until they can like their own.

Yes, I’d love to outlaw pornography. I’d also like to see a return to the kind of good manners that avoids offending other people.

Heart of Jesus, full of goodness and love, have mercy on us.

Ruthie
