I dont know much about other then it being having the idea that being physically fit is also spiritually helpful, which I find an interesting parralel to Eastern practises like yoga and various martial arts.I’ve also heard that it was one of the founding motives for the YMCA (hence the initialism for Young Men’s Christian Association).Does anyone else know much else about it?.

The sound of “muscular Christianity” sounds like an attempt to fuse jock-culture and Christianity. Well, I have difficulty imagining Jesus going for it much…

Essentially part of the late 19th–early 20th century Progressive movement as it applied to mainstream US Protestantism. One of it’s major exponents was Anthony Drexel-Biddle, who was portrayed by Fred MacMurray in the Disney movie The Happiest Millionaire.

It also was very big in Britain (where the YMCA was founded) where they said seemed to believe that a healthy soul needed a healthy body and vice versa. It also applied to the British Army since many Britons felt that there empire was bringing christianity to the heathens through their empire
