My wife and I were both Catholic and were married in the Catholic Church in 2003. Unfortunately she left the Catholic Church in 2004 as in now attending a Christian (Non-Denominational Church). We were blessed with a child in September and she has agreed to baptizing our child. Her only concern is that she believes that if has the child baptizes the child in the Catholic Church that she will be obligated to raising our child Catholic. I totally desire that my child is raised Catholic and I want him to receive the sacraments. I intend on being my child’s primary educator on the Catholic faith (which means I will have to continue to learn more and more) .

My questions are: What is the Catholic Church stance on interfaith marriages and raising the children Catholic? Who has the obligation to raise the child Catholic? Since my wife has many objections to the Catholic faith, what is she obligated to do? When we married in the Catholic Church (when we were both Catholic) is that when we were obligated to raise our child Catholic?

I appreciate all of your assistance,

Adios and God Bless Catholic Answers,
Gregorio.

Dear Gregorio,

In a mixed marriage the Catholic is obliged to do all in his or her power to bring the children up in the Catholic faith. This situation is giving you the opportunity to learn your faith. I suggest that you order the book, “Unabridged Christianity” by Fr. Mario Romero. You can order it through amazon.com. It would be good for both of you to read.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
