What is non-denominational?

I hear all the time about people that are nondenominational or go to a nondenominational church? It seems to me that nondenominational is itself a denomination. Also, what in the world could the services possibly be that would make them nondenominational? I’m sure there are plenty of people from many different denominations that would feel that the teachings at the nondenominational church are not in line in what they believe. The only way these things would really be non-denominational is to preach about something that ALL Christians have in common, which is not much.

Since a denomination is considered to mean a group of churches which share some organizational identity, the term means “We don’t have any higher authority than our own parish’s leadership.”

Several combine non-denominational with a denomination identifier… These are mostly lead by dissidents from that denomination, who struck off on their own, at least initially.

“Non-denominational Baptist” is almost synonymous with “Independent Baptist” and refers to taking the Baptist views, but not being a member of one of the recognized Baptist Conventions.

In general, they range from quiet and faith filled communities who try to recreate the early church from what’s in the gospels to MegaChurch MediaBlitzers.

Some of the most faith filled people I’ve met have been non-denom preacher types. But, by the same token, some of the most obvious money-grubber “preacher-seeking-income” “Check the checkstubs for tithing” types are also non-denoms.

It’s essentially a “Doesn’t fit in any other group” clade.

Wrong. If they want Jesus in charge, they’d be Catholic. If they are non-denominational, THEY want to be in charge. Nuff said.
