What is Orthodox/Traditional Catholicism?

I wondered what would be considered Traditional Catholicism and would that be the same thing as Orthodox Catholicism not to be confused with Greek or Russian Orthodox churches, I understand how those are different.

Also, is EWTN a good example of Traditional/Orthodox Catholic teachings?

I think, your confusion comes from the use of the word Orthodox in regards to Traditional Catholic practice.

When placed in the context of teaching, the term orthodox is used as the antonym of heterodox -heresy.

Traditional Catholic practice is basically just latin rite Catholic, where as there are Eastern Catholics that are in union with Rome, but have the Eastern spirituality like the Greek orthodox or Russian Orthodox.

Personally I am a fan of EWTN, but I dont like every show.

The use of the word ‘orthodox’ on this forum usually has to do with “right teaching” as opposed to heterodox or heretical teaching.

Traditionalists often include being orthodox (above) however also include those who prefer (or even will only assist at) the EF or Traditional Latin Mass. Along with those Traditionalists are those who will only go along with the teachings of the RCC pre-VII or who will even deny some of the documents of VII. There are also those who are not in full-communion (or have totally separated themselves from communion) with the current Pope and/or Holy See. (However, you won’t see many of those on these boards.)

As far as EWTN being a good example of orthodox/Traditional teaching; from my viewpoint and that of many on these boards EWTN does a fairly good (although not always perfect) job of giving the orthodox (“right teaching”) of the RCC. They include some Traditional doctrine and worship as is only appropriate. However, from reading some of the posts, I believe that they may fail to give the teachings/emphasis that some of our brethren feel are so important and are a part of Tradition.

I think orthodox would be defined as in accordance with all Church teachings that are obligatory.

Heterodox would be those not conforming with Church teaching in obligatory areas (which is most things, btw.)

“Wrong teaching” is hetrodox. Only a teaching that denies a dogma of the Church (a de fide teaching, such as the existence of hell) is to be considered heretical.

A conflict exists simply because we do not agree on what the obligatory Church teachings are … or we think that some new “obligatory” teachings are in conflict with past “obligatory” teachings.
