What is Pontifical Secret? I’ve read a little about it, but I still don’t really understand what it means. And, if I’m understanding the idea correctly, isn’t it bad for the Church to keep secrets? Shouldn’t the Vatican be sharing everything with us? It makes me extremely uneasy that there could be a bunch of secrets out there that general Catholics aren’t allowed to know about.

Hi,

I personally had never heard of a “pontifical secret,” but upon reading about it have found that it is a variation of “pontifical secrecy.” Any social body must be discreet about matters involving the reputations and even the safety of others. For example, during World War II the Vatican was quite secret about hiding large numbers of Jews, clothed in religious habits in convents and monasteries all over Rome as depicted in the movie, “The Scarlet and the Black.” (See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontifical_secret and
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scarlet_and_the_Black).
