The opposite of humility 😛

St. Francis de Sales said humility is simply acknowledgment of the truth–especially the truth of one’s utter dependence on God. St. Catherine of Siena said it requires frank self-knowledge. Pride is therefore the opposite of these things. Pride is therefore a suppression of the truth within, a dependence on one’s self, and a false image one’s self. Anyway, that’s my best guess 😃

So if u said ’ this games just for pride ’ what would that mean

Pride is the sin; the basis for all the rest. Pride puts oneself in place of God. It is the sin of Satan, and the sin of Adam and Eve. Pride states: I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.

Saint Paul reminds us that we have no basis for our pride. *What have you that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if it were not a gift? *[1 Cor 4:7]

The Greeks feared Pride as Hubris; it is the precursor to destruction in their tragedies. The Book of Proverbs [16:18 ] says the same: Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
*
*Archbishop Sheen offers eight manifestations of Pride:
  1. Atheism, which denies our dependence upon God.
  2. Intellectual Vanity, which thinks it encompasses all knowledge.
  3. Superficiality, which judges others by their appearance, dress, wealth.
  4. Snobbery, which sneers at others to support its own superiority
  5. Vainglory, which seeks fame in the trappings of society.
  6. Presumptuousness, which causes one to value oneself too highly, to seek rewards rather than to make a contribution.
  7. Exaggerated Sensitiveness, To be unable to hear of ones faults.

One might argue that there is positive pride and there is negative pride. Positve pride might be something to the affect of washing someone elses dishes more thoroughly than we would dishes for our own use. Negative pride could be the following behavoirs: seldomly admitting fault, seldomly apologizing, recording injury, retaliating, or often hateful.

I Dont really know what pride is :S some one please help me
It is a difficult one.
Let’s say a new headmaster takes over a failing school in the inner city. He calls his teachers together and says “I want the pupils to have more pride in themselves”.
It is hard to say he is wrong.

On the other hand Bloggs is an accountant, has a stable job, and earns maybe 20% more money and has a newer car than Jones, next door. Bloggs considers himself to know all about life, what moral values to hold, what political values to hold. Certainly he knows he is better than Jones.

Bloggs is a fool. All can be brought down by a stroke of the giovernment’s pen “we agree to mutual recognition with Indian accoutancy qualifications”.

So how do we distinguish between Bloggs and the headmaster? In fact should we, or is the headmaster just producing little Blogges?

So if u said im proud of u would that be a sin? also if u play a sports game for fun or pride would that be a sin

Blessed are the poor in spirit.

To be poor is to recognize that “fundamental emptiness which lies at the depths of our being: the consciousness of our condition as creatures…All that we have and are comes from another, and will be taken away from us some day, whether we wish it or not.” (Pinckaers)

Our money yes, but also our friends, our possessions, our jobs, our intelligence, our very bodies are all gifts from God. To be prideful is to not recognize this and to believe that you’ve somehow accomplished everything in your life.

As an example, JimmyMadden08 asked about being proud of an athletic ability. To be humble you need to recognize that the gift of an athletic ability is from God, he gave it to you and he can take it away. As it is a gift you have an obligation to use it to glorify him (play honestly, be a good Christian both on and off the field, etc). Should you begin to believe that you have control over that ability, that you are a god in your own right and you deserve this gift, then you’ll be drifting over into pride.

For a more personal example, I have been blessed with great artistic talent, but for a long time I wouldn’t accept it as a gift and refused to use it. I was upset that I didn’t have more talent; it wasn’t enough. Then the Lord took that talent away by means of a pinched nerve that caused my hand to fall asleep when I held the pencil too long. When I could no longer draw I realized that there was no reason I should have any talent to begin with. When I was able to draw, even the most simple of pictures, it was a great joy and a gift. I learned to thank the Lord for that gift and I am now free to offer it back to him. Where before I would refuse to use the talent because I wanted perfection, I’ve now learned to let go of my desire for perfection and am free to use it as he wills.

(yes I copied and pasted from my blog, but I just posted on this a couple weeks ago 😉 )

Pride is trying to be God without the grace of God; we can only be deified by God’s grace and gifts to us, and our co-operation with these, not by our own efforts alone.

The other day I prayed for Pride to be removed from every aspect of my life. Today I remembered how “I” was able to fix that problem without God’s help… 😉 If you get my picture…

Well in C.S. Lewis book called Mere Christianity there is a chapter on pride. It is the best writen text “well other then the Bible” on the subject. Wel at least that I have read. The description of Pride’s competive nature was very helpful to myself.

I really am not understainding what pride is,

Can someone answer and explain to me if these examples are pride?

I really dont think anyone is below me i have always thought of myself as beneath other people because I think i do not look good and i plan to do nothing about it ive been teased lots of names about my apperance so i do know what it feels like so i think i dont look better then anyone everyone is equal.
I also think that no job is bad as long as you work but i do think that a person that sits at home on the dole about 30 years old not injured could go out and find a job very easily somehow i think if a person has a job is better then this person but i also think that it is not wrong of a person to be injured and stay on the dole i have the same amount of respect for him as a person that works because i know a)He would work if he could
b)He worked and got injured which shows he put effort into it.
But i have sometimes said things like “My phone is better then your’s” but i never say this to a person that has not done anything to me ive said this to a person that has said continuasly to me that their phone is better then mine but when another person comes along i never say anything.
I also dont care where people live mainly because i know i live in a flat and ive never told anyone i live in a flat.
But one time i can remember is about 3 years ago i told some guys us as a family have a BMW X5 and some belived it and nothing came out of it i never spoke of it again i went to confession said i lied but was this Pride did i try to get pride?
I also didnt know what pride was until yesterday and i havent had any pride since then so would this for me be classed as a mortal sin or would everything to do with pride after i knew be classed as a mortal sin i wont be going to confession until next month but i also dont want to miss outm on the holy bread “Eucharist”?
