What is a Private Intention Mass? Can I go to that mass, or is it a private family-only kind of thing? Thanks and God Bless.

You can go to that Mass. It just means that the person doesn’t want their Mass intention revealed publicly.

THANK you 🙂 New to this faith, so thank you again. It’s a little embarrassing to ask, you know?

Don’t be afraid to ask.

Sometimes the parish does not want the intention to be revealed. In my parish if you request a Mass for a living person they won’t announce the name.

That is something I’ve not heard before. I can see if the person requesting the Mass indicates on the envelope that it is a private (or special) intention that the Mass intention won’t be announced, but many times people become aware of birthdays, anniversaries, illnesses, etc., when they see the name of a living parishioner.

That is partly the issue if the parishoner is not requesting the Mass themselves. In my case though the person was not a member of the parish.

In our parish a Private Intention is just that. They don’t even tell the person entering it into the Mass log.
Some people are really fussy about this. They WANT everyone to know (even God 😉) that they are having a Mass said for a specific person. We had a lady once who demanded that the priest say the intention out loud with the Host in his hands “this Mass is for so and so.”

Yeah. not gonna happen. It’s said in the announcements before Mass and again during the Prayer intentions. At Daily Mass, Father announces it before the Liturgy of the Eucharist begins.

All Masses are open to everyone.
Welcome home.
