What is Purgatory?

Nope, I’m the real deal…:o

When I was in high school I, was really shy. I was also the proverbial 98 lb weakling, and all the girls were interested in the jocks.
When I was in the Navy I was under a lot of pressure to lose my virginity. I even had a couple opportunities to do so (I shan’t elaborate:blush:) but it just didn’t feel right. I wasn’t a Catholic then (or even a Christian), but the thought of being intimate with someone I’d just met in a bar (or other unmentionable places ) was something foreign to me. I figure it was God’s grace in my life…
for sure…

you’re fortunate to be a man… you likely will never have sex forced on you… as happens to many women (molestation… rape) I wanted to be a virgin forever but i was forced.

Jesus has restored me, though… I feel like (am) a new person… been celibate for a long time (going on forever :D)…

i think its wonderful you are a virgin…

thank God you weren’t a jock… 😃

all those jocks are probably wishing they had their innocence back…

(unless they’re too “jock” to admit such thoughts…even to themselves??? )

I’m one (in a million, probably). I’ve thought sometimes about being in a relationship, but it seems all the women I find myself attracted to are already married. Perhaps that’s God’s way of telling me He wants me to remain single…

I hope you’re right Rosalie, about virgins having a special place in heaven…
I’ve been celibate almost as long as… the span of yrs in which i was not always chaste… Does that count??

i believe in the power of Jesus… He can restore a person’s virginity… i think that’s waht goes on in Purgatory (and/or spending time before the Blessed Sacramnet)… restoration… The Lord is my shepherd… he restores my soul…

Jesus said we must become liike little children to enter Heaven… so i have a long way to go… :o but oh well…

You may be interested in making a personal/private vow of chastity; since you’re living that way anyway. It’s more of a direction when formalized. I think you’d benefit from the book I mentioned. Someone here on CAF mentioned it to me a while back. It’s a wealth of information for the single vocation.:👍
well, i kinda did that… just to myself…

i thought i would be celibate forever when i made that informal vow to myself… and maybe i will… but i got to the point where i didn’t want to be celibate anymore… although at this point don’t care much one way or the other…

i was attracted to one man…after umpteen yrs of celibacy & living totally alone… and maybe that’s waht changed me (?) - being attracted to that guy… then i was attracted to another (when the 1st didn’t work out)… I think … well, it only matters what God thinks…

In any case, I’m not looking for a virgin or non-virgin… it is an irrelevent issue w/ me… but i can’t find someone who loves Jesus… (or loves Him as in: Does Everytyhing HE wants… or Tries to)…

can’t say i do everything He wants every day in every way but at least i try…

i probably don’t get out much… becasue i don’t even try to meet anyone… gave up… 🤷

just stick to myself… and Jesus, who loves me no matter what… 🙂

it’s ironic to me… that I’ve never been good enough for humans (parents, boyfriends) - they always seemed to dislike something about me or maybe they just liked someone else more or what have you… … Now i have found Someone who knows absolutely everything about me, all my sins and weaknesses & “icky stuff”… and yet He loves me …!!! Unbelievable!!! :)He doesn’t even look at that imperfect (and so-called imperfect) stuff about me… He only looks at the bad consequences that have resulted from those imperfections… and even when i sin… (venial, mostly?) it is the effects of the sin that Jesus wants me to deal with… not the sin itself… or at least that is what seems to be going on with me… can’t speak for anyone else… don’t even know if i should be putting things this way… I’m not in the Real Presence right now… so… uh… I’m not “in my right mind” 😃 I’m trying to go by memory… (of when i WAS There)

anyway… all i DO know for sure is that Jesus loves me and helps me… :hug3:

humans just seem to want to kick me when i’m down…

.

sufferings for the day:

I’m not in the Real Presence… 😦

there’s so much sin in the world…

Jesus won’t beam me up 😦

still celibate after all these years… (not sure that’s a suffering, though…) 🙂

(it’s just my &^%$&^ body that thinks so… it just won’t shut the h-- up!! :banghead::hmmm:)

Don’t we all have a long way to go…😉
anyone over the age of 20 has a long way to go on that one…

and it saddens me that those who are caught up in sin don’t see how thye are postponing things by their sinfulness… and lack of repentance… and expiation…

I’ve been expiating for years now and still feel i have a long way to go… before i am ready for Heaven…

thank God there is a purgatory… for all our unfinished business… :juggle::gopray:

I know what you mean. I’d love to attend daily Mass, but it’s just not possible with my work schedule…
what were you before?

what 1st interested you in the Catholic faith?

how long did it take you to decide to be Catholic?

just wondering… 🙂

It’s kind of a long story (a sad tale of a mis-spent youth 😊 ), but here goes…

My Mom was a lapsed Catholic and my Dad a lapsed Methodist. However, we did attend a Methodist church for a few months when I was a kid since my folks felt I should have some exposure to religion. We also attended church with my paternal grandparents (also Methodist) occasionally when we visited. However, I was pretty much an agnostic for most of my early life. There were two incidents that made an impression on me. Once was when we were attending church with my grandparents and they had a communion service (the first and only one I had seen). People went up by pews and knelt at the altar to partake. I didn’t have a clue what they were doing, but thought it was beautiful (it impressed me more than the sermons or songs I heard) and wanted to go up, but we didn’t. I had a second, similar experience in the Navy. The first submarine I was assigned to had regular religious services every Sunday. On one particular Sunday the Protestants in the crew were on the mess deck preparing for a communion service (Catholics met in the wardroom), and as I was passing through to get a cup of coffee, was invited to attend. I declined, saying I wasn’t into that stuff, but I had the feeling I was turning my back on something (or Someone).
When I got out of the Navy I had hit a rough patch in my life. Through my own stupidity, I lost my job, my license and my car in a short period of time. I was able to find another job, and was able to keep my head above water (barely), but I was at a point in my life where I was questioning the purpose of my existence (God no doubt was using this to draw me to Himself). I started reading the Bible and came to discover how Jesus died for me and knew all about me and loved me. This really made a big impression on me and I had what non-Catholics would call a “born-again” experience that washed away my despair.
At this point I felt I should start going to church, but didn’t know which one (and if you ever look in the phone book, you can see there are A LOT). I thought briefly going to a Methodist church, but didn’t feel strongly compelled to do so. At the time, I was rather shy, and didn’t feel comfortable walking in to a church where I didn’t know anybody. I also felt that the original Church Jesus and His Apostles founded must still exist somewhere. Unfortunately, around this time I had read religious literature written by various sects that attacked the Catholic faith. While I eventually rejected the claims made by them, it left me with a residual of anti-Catholicism. After a year or so I attended a nearby Baptist church, and when the church split, attended briefly the church that the minister had left to found. After this time I had given up churchgoing. I also had a good friend (who would later be my sponsor in the Church) who kept asking me to go to RCIA to learn more about the Catholic faith. I refused, because I read the Bible and “knew better.” I eventually encountered someone who was Greek Orthodox, and from them learned more about Church History (all of it, and not just from the Reformation on) and I saw how things like devotion to Mary and the Saints, the Sacraments etc. were believed by all Christians prior to the Reformation. I even attended an Orthodox service and found it very beatiful. At this time I finally gave in to my friends request to check out RCIA. Around the same time I read "Crossing the Threshold of Hope by JPII, and saw that not only was the Pope not the antichrist, but he was a the voice of the Christian faith and provided for a unity that the Orthodox lacked).
To wrap up a long story, I was received into the faith at the Easter Vigil in 1996 and have never looked back… 👍

thank you. That was very interesting - and more/less in-depth, unlike some conversion stories told here @ CAF… (I like all the details i can get… )🙂

What made you read the bible? I was never into the bible until… well, i had one of those conversion experiences you speak of… filled w/ the spriit… Then i couldn’t get enough of the bible (New Testament) but after a couple yrs, i backslid and didn’t have an interest in it, much… for yrs … Then i found a cheap plastic free rosary in an “empty” RC Church and that changed my whole life… in a miraculous way… although the devil seemed to panic & made life miserable for a very long time afterwards… (long, long story…).

Anyway… was there some crisis that made you pick up the Bible?

(does your job involve writing because your post was very readable… )

I’m glad you liked it. I tried not to laden my story with too much detail, but wanted to cover the highlights.

When I got out of the Navy, I got a job with this armored car company- not a big company, just a small outfit with converted pick-up trucks picking up deposits from convenience stores. Well. I had a couple accidents with their vehicles, so I lost the job. I had also gotten some speeding tickets while on the job, so my license was suspended. And with no job, I couldn’t afford to make the payments on my car, so that was repo’ed (fortunately, I had paid cash for the mobile home I was living in with the money I got when I was discharged, so I had a roof over my head). After about a month or so (I had bought a savings bond every month when I was in the service, so I was able to use those to buy food, pay utilities etc in the meantime) I was able to get another job. Like I said in the previous post, I was keeping my head above water, but was questioning the meaning of existence- what’s the point of it if all we do is work and die? Around this time I had traveled to Charleston, SC (I was thinking of joining the Merchant Marine, and was going to the Coast Guard office there that issued Merchant Seamans cards). I got there late in the evening and while staying at the hotel finished the book I had brought with me. I wanted to read something else, and came across the Gideon Bible that is usually there, and started reading it the book of Genesis, probably). When I got home I decided to read more, so I bought a KJV and started reading…

As for my writing, I’ve always been an avid reader, so perhaps that carries over into my reading. I work as a Registered Nurse, and while I chart regularly on patients, but nothing like I write here…
