In pictures of the TLM, there are what look like cards on front of the candles. I can’t quite make out what they are. What are they and is there any reason why this custom hasn’t passed onto the Mass of Paul VI?
I don’t know if he’s talking about altar cards or candle ornaments.There are three altar cards used at the EF Mass. They have certain important prayers used at every Mass, in Latin with decorative imagery usually.
The one on the right has the Lavabo prayer, the one in the middle has the Roman Canon, and the one on the left has the Last Gospel. These are there for the priest to read from during Mass.
They are not used in the OF because the Lavabo and Last Gospel were removed, and the Roman Canon was made optional.
