What is required to fulfill the Sunday obligation?

For example:
  • At what point is someone too late to Mass for the precept to be fulfilled?
  • How much of the responses and participation is required from the worshipper?
  • Does the Mass have to be fully licit in order for it to fulfill the Sunday obligation? (Also, what are the requirements for a valid Mass?)
What is everything required?

I have heard if you make it before the gospel reading you are in good shape
the second question I don’t know

the third question I think you would be ok if you attended an illicit mass but invalid is a different story. Its pretty strict what a invalid mass is and its very hard to make it invalid I think one of the things that makes it invalid is not saying this is my body this is my blood. Other then that and having the proper order It hunk that’s all that has to happen for it to be valid.

How about “this is the cup of my blood”?

How about “this is the cup of my blood”?
I’m sure that would be fine, as long as the priest recognizes that the wine and bread are the body and blood of Christ.

this explains it

ourladyswarriors.org/articles/badliturgy.htm

according to this there are 4 requirements

a male ordained priest (i be shocked to find a situation where this isn’t true)

The intent of the priest must be that he wants to make Christ present in the Eucharist. I suspect all priest want to do this.

The matter must be valid you have to go look up cannon law to find out what is allowed and disallowed but i suspect all churches have valid bread and wine

then form is also important, its important that priest say what the church hash subscribed as the correct prayers. But for it to be valid he just has to say this is my body and this is … my blood.

I have never heard a priest not say this is my body and this is my blood or the cup of my blood, I have heard a couple of priest change the words, some minor probably slips of the tounge then someone who probably changed them in an illicit way.

  1. you are supposed to attend Mass, there used to be a “too late” rule (I remember it as before the second reading) but that was done away with as “minimalist”. If you are late on purpose, that’s a problem. But if you are late beyond your control (once I got to Mass just as the Gospel started after getting lost in a strange town) that’s different.
  2. None. Participation is mental. You don’t have to say a word or sing a note as long as you are joining your prayers and intentions to those of the priest celebrating the Mass.
  3. No it doesn’t have to be licit. A Mass with abuses is still valid and still fulfills your obligation. Likewise, so does a Mass that is held illicitly but it is usually not prudent to attend if you know this ahead of time.
  4. An invalid Mass is one without a valid consecration.

You are required arrive on time except where circumstances beyond your control prevent it. Where the cut-off is, I don’t know. I’ve never actually seen anything that says it…maybe ask your local Priest. The Church has not given a specific answer on this matter…likely to prevent people from only showing up at the said cut-off time.

Participation in the Mass is a matter of what Mass you go to. In the Tridentine Mass, you are to pay attention and follow along with the Priest, but the servers/Acolytes represent you and say the majority of the responses on behalf of the congregation. At the Novus Ordo, the congregation says the responses and you should participate as much as you are able (taking into account that you might miss a few things while you tend to a child or step out to take a toddler to the “potty”).

The Mass needs to be a valid Mass said by a Priest according to the proper form of the Mass that it is supposed to be. Novus Ordo should be done according to the order of that Mass, Tridentine according to the Tridentine, etc…

I posted the requirements of a valid mass above.

it just has to be said by a valid ordained male priest

he must have intent to consecrate the Host

he must use the correct material

and he must say this is my body and this is … my blood.

all other things don’t matter, while many things can make a mass illicit and that is never ever a good thing. Very few things make a Mass invalid. I don’t think the Church wants even 20% of the masses performed being invalid.

Okay, I see. I’m also getting confused between “illicit” and “invalid”. Is this why (and keep in mind I’m not trying to start a fight with SSPX) the Catholic Church says the SSPX Mass is illicit, yet valid?

i have no idea, but as long as SSPX priests if they do exist were ordained by the bishop, and they meet all the other requirements I suspect its valid, but I have no idea. So this is just a guess on my part.

There are Masses that are illicit. This means they are celebrated without permission or with some other irreguarity (ie on the beach without the Bishop’s approval)

Other Masses have illicit elements in them. These days it is hard to find a Mass that doesn’t have something illiicit going on.

And then there are invalid Consecrations. If this happens, the Mass isn’t invalid - it just isn’t. No Consecration = no Mass.

…Participation is mental. You don’t have to say a word or sing a note as long as you are joining your prayers and intentions to those of the priest celebrating the Mass. …
Alright, then what amount of mental participation is necessary? The line must be somewhere between “I thought about donuts during the Our Father” and “I texted throughout the entire Mass”, right?

Okay, that makes it MUCH clearer. For some reason I had been equating illicit to invalid. :o Thanks so much for the explanations!! 🙂

I say as long as your not daydreaming the entire mass or just trying to pass the time the entire mass you should be ok. As long as you are trying to participate in the Mass you should be ok. I’m sure we all have thoughts that aren’t participating thoughts during the Mass. But if your heart is in it you should be ok.

You should do your best to focus on the Mass. If you are texting, you are not participating in the Mass.
If you find yourself thinking about donuts (or whatever) during the Mass, bring your focus back on the Mass as soon as you realize it and practice with taking custody of your thoughts (I actually suffer from this kind of stuff myself).

Neither of those things are good, of course and the latter might be actually sinful. But the question is whether a person has fulfilled their obligation. If you go to Mass with the intention of being at Mass then you have fulfilled your obligation, if minimally.

Sacriligious behavior is it’s own sin. Why would someone go to Mass in order not to sin by missing the obligation but then commit another sin by texting through the Mass?
