Trust me, you do not want to get mixed up with these people.

Here’s what I understand Scientology to believe (although they try to hide these things from the public): Millions of years ago, our sector of the galaxy was ruled by an alien god, Xenu. Xenu brought the excess population from the sector of the galaxy to earth, and murdered them with hydrogen bombs. Supposedly, the souls of these murdered people, “body thetans,” inhabit everyone. The goal in Scientology is to go through an “auditing process” where you are cleared of the thetans, and git rid of what they call the “reactive mind.” Unfortunately, they don’t tell new converts about the Xenu story until they’ve gone through a certain number of auditing sessions, and have spent quite a bit of money. You can read more about this dangerous cult here.

Like I said, you don’t want to get mixed up with them.

Final Blackout is considered Lron’s best SF writing. Dianetics used re-cast 1940’s computer jargon mated to psycholocial anyalysis he never gave credit for–what’s known as “ab-reaction psychology”, which is doubly tragi-comic considering Scientology vendetta against any legitimate psychology or psychiatry.

A GREAT period piece of writing (early 50’s) about the transition period of Dianetics into Scientology is Martin Gardner’s In the Name of Science–an entire chapter is dedicated to Dianetics of the time, though the true weirdness & occultism had yet to be exposed
I prefer his more fantasy-oriented writing - FEAR or TYPEWRITER IN THE SKY. Prewar stuff.

Gardner’s book is good, I own it. (He says a couple of slightly disparaging things about Chesterton, though. Curiously, he is now something of a Chesterton fan). At the time Gardner was writing of, Hubbard was still pushing Dianetics as a mental science, without the “religious” or “cosmic” aspects, IIRC.
