…If mary did not dress like this, do you believe that she dressed like the modern day Christian …? What type of dress do you think is appropriate for this great woman to be wearing in public.
I think she probably did indeed dress in a similar manner to the picture under discussion, as do many modern Christian women in the present day holy land and other places with similar climates and cultures. My earlier post does not dispute this, only the suggestion that this manner of dress necessarily indicates oppression. I see nothing inappropriate about this manner of dress in public.

Joseph Bilodeau see Post#19:
The picture you refer to is Mary with the child Jesus. She is not dressed in “a muslim woman’s way of dressing”, but in an artist’s depiction of a first century jewish woman’s way of dressing, as Mary lived several hundred years before the beginning of Islam. As for those who might believe that this manner of dress indicates oppresion, well, you might find some people who do believe that. This belief, however, does not seem to be supported either by an analysys of women known to be oppressed in various ways, who wear much the same sorts of clothing as other women within their social groups; or by an analysys of women who are known to wear clothing that covers the majority of their bodies, who comprise both women known to be oppressed and women known not to be oppressed. In any case, even were such a relationship between clothing and oppression able to be positively demonstrated, the most we might be able to infer from this picture would be the artist’s opinion of Mary, presuming that the artist was aware of this relationship and was attempting to communicate his or her opinions through this picture.QUOTE]

Sometimes I think if Jesus (peace be upon him) and Mary would come on this earth right now in physical form and walk down a street in the midwest, they would both be harrassed. Probably someone would scream at them “muslim terrorist!” think about it…Jesus with a beard, Mary with a head covering.

If mary did not dress like this, do you believe that she dressed like the modern day Christian …? What type of dress do you think is appropriate for this great woman to be wearing in public.
The Virgin Mary has appeared in many Marian Apparitions through the centuries. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, THIS IS HOW THE VIRGIN MARY ALWAYS APPEARED AND APPEARS IN ALL MARIAN APPARITIONS.

The Virgin Mary did prophecy in Fatima in 1917 that FASHIONS WILL BE INTRODUCED THAT WOULD OFFEND GOD DEEPLY.

Hey Evanescence
THe idea is that if you say “let everyone wear what they want” you can not follow that by saying “as long as they are not naked” b/c you have restricted their freedom.
The idea in Islam is that society changes, what is appalled 50 years ago is seen as the norm now…what is appalling now will seem like the norm 50 years from now. If i go to a nude beach, being naked is ok…if i’m in Church, being naked is highly offensive…so you see, you are depending on what society tells you…how do you know this is correct?
In Islam, we recieve this guidance from God, who better than our own Creator to tell us what is best for us
In terms of being forced…look at the muslim women in this country, not forced…but CHOOSE to cover. I’ve recieved some amazing insight from women converts to Islam who tell me that “covering up” is the best thing they have ever done for themselves
I’m not really restricting weather you want to walk around in the nude or not its just against the law to walk around in the nude well it is in my country anyway

It doesn’t matter if you want to be naked I guess of you prefer things to be a bit eh breezy!

And I was referring to those countries that make it law that women must cover their face, its not fair on the women if they rather not have a head cover.

I wouldn’t want to have a head covering in fact im not even a fan on wearing hats *i suffer the conseqences in summer with u burnt skull though :o *

But I do like dressy stuff and when i get bored I sometimes dress up and keep it real with a bed sheet lol when i want to dress up as a super hero I’m not keen on those skin tight outfites that most superheros wear :nope:

Evanescence * I wish nuns still wore those habits, if so I would become one!* 😃

But you have to respect the law of the land your in…or you can move. Similiar to the law in France against wearing the hijab.

“habits” does that refer to the whole gear, head covering and dress? I thought they still do

Actually I would rather that people would wear clothes.
If a man walks aound showing off his johnny in public you’ll see me running in the opposite direction mentally scarred.

But if you were in a poor country and there were little kids who are in a poor family that could not offord clothes then i wouldn’t mind it.

Some women in countries have their rights abused and in some cases they are not allowed to leave the country! the husband has complete control over his wife and kids 😦 Ask Amnesty International on further info about this.

I thought the outfit was called a “habit” Nuns don’t wear the outfits as much anymore the nun at my local church doesn’t 😦
I like those outfits they wear! I think some might still wear them…

Muslim women wear someting very similar to the “habit” except not in the white and black color.

lol…one day i was wearing a white and black head covering and i think i had about 4 people ask me if i was a nun 😃

Islam doesn’t change despite what happens to the society around it. There was this woman who wanted to walk around topless (no shirt, no bra) because the men can walk around topless in the summer during a heat wave. She was arrested and then took her case to the courts. She won and it is now legal for woman to walk around topless in public. This is what society has become. And they think we’re the weird ones.

I think a moderate level of modesty is essential. A woman needs to protect herself from men whose sexuality is out of control, and modest clothing is one strategy. A man who encourages his wife to dress in a provocative manner is not being protective of her.

My hair is longer, and I generally keep it up, rather than “loose”. It is within my cultural tradition. There is only one step between that and the Muslim veil or the Mennonite cap.

I, too, have read about various Muslim forms of covering as being considered oppressive, especially in the context of the new laws in France. It had never seemed oppressive to me (looking at it from the outside). I think lots of women would like being well-covered, especially younger ones. Also, the Muslim women I know wear different colors or fabrics, so there is some choice for them to express themselves (in the USA).

Perhaps what bothers people is that some rule is *requiring *certain dress, and it is not optional. But life is like that in many ways. Women around here must shave their legs or be labeled as having disgusting hygiene.

In my church and my old church (different denominations), most of us believe that the Biblical statement that women shouls have long hair and a head covering and men should have short hair comes from the Greek custom that a married woman covered her head, a woman looking for a husband didn’t, and a prostitute had short hair. A man had short hair unless he was a male prostitute. Thus, the Apostle is urging us to let it be known we ar emarried if we are, and not to make people think we are prostitutes or homosexual. I think that makes sense, because otherwise we must account for prophets and godly men in the OT with long hair.
So the equivalent now would just depend on where you live.
The idea that women deliberately bare skin to attract the male eye makes me snort. If the men who say so could only hear what goes on in a women’s dressing room. No one says, “Am I covering up too much?” We always strive to cover as much as we can while being comfortable, practical and clearly members of our own generation. I pity the girls of the bare- hips generation. I notice many of them wear coats wheen it’s hot, because they are looking for shelter from the male eye but don’t want to wear outdated trousers. Maybe it’s a West Coast thing.

Hello,

100 years ago in England, a women who displayed more then her ankles would have been considered loose and of low morale character. Today, a women who wears a bikini to the shopping mall would also be considered loose and of low morale character.

Do you notice the degradation of morale behaviour as time progresses? What happens 100 years from now? At that point, walking around naked will be normal, I’m guessing.

Muslims rely on Gods definition on what is considered moral dressing. We dont use human interpretation. In Islam, a man must cover from his knees to his navel, a women must cover from her ankles to her face (including her hair). This is Gods will. There is no oppression in this, unless you consider God an oppressor.

Munawar
ANY system that forces a woman to wear a black sack with eyeholes, covering her entire body IS oppressive. This requirement is not optional. but MANDATORY! "Religious " police in Iran, Afganistan and Saudi Arabia enforce this code ruthlessly. Women are nothing more than chattel property under islam, a measure of how backward this “religion” is. The so-called “rights” that a woman supposedly has under islam is hay that has already been through the horse IMHO.

Please do not mix culture with religion.

Under islamic law, women can vote, own property, ask for a divorce (all of this hundreds of years before any other women). As for driving, there were no cars back then, but the women used to go fight in wars (probably on horses/camels) and were involved in every aspect of society. If you want to talk about women’s rights in islam, open another thread

I want to leave this one just to discuss the dress code. Thanks!
Under Islamic law a married woman cannot walk out of her house without her husband’s permission. She cannot travel without a male family member as an escort.

And the clergy in the Middle Ages referred to sideless surcoats as “windows/gates of Hell” because they were deemed too revealing. There is nothing new under the sun.

Sorry if my last post offended anyone in anyway, I’m just against sexism and women getting told what to wear.

I think people have the right to wear whatever they want (as long as its not your birthday suit) to show who they are and what they like. Some people might wear a black dressy outfit with heavy eyeliner while others like jeans and a bright red top.
so what why can’t women where what they want? i don’t like it when women are forced to cover up every inch of her body and has to wear a cage on her head!

If people like head coverings then go ahead wear it! its what they like, they feel comftable with it so go ahead, if you rather not then don’t!

please no more fashon tips from religion and government PLEASE!!!

Evanescence
Hey honey, would you mind wearing this burqa I bought for you?
You’d be really hot in it!

can’t women where whatever the hell they want without being labled or thought of differently!

Gosh why do women need to wear a head covering in mass or in the street? I don’t want to wear a stupid rag on my head!

Why does God worry about head coverings? boo hoo I’m not wearing a head covering its the end of the world!

Evanescence (angry as usual)
Looks like we need an anger managment thread to me.

Frankly I don’t want to “wear a stupid rag on my head” either. But my veil is not that. However, I believe the Holy Spirit urges me to cover. And if the HS said “wear a stupid rag on my head” I would.
