Just wondering
this is another good verseThe Eucharistic SacrificeThe Mass is a Propitiatory Sacrifice
The Book of Hebrews and Jesus as the Eternal High Priest: Implications about the Eucharist as Sacrifice
I like Malachi 1:11 For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name, and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts.
It tells us of a pure offering made always and everywhere. The mass fits that description, whereas a static sacrifice confined to the bounds of time and space would not.
Yes.this is another good verse
would it be correct to say that offering and sacrifice have the seem meaning in this context? I think they would.
yes, and of course just the presence of the altar in Christian worship implies and indicates sacrifice, especially to the Jewish audience that these writings were intended forYes.
Another good one is
*“We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat.” (Heb. 13:10)
- If you study all of Hebrews, especially that chapter, you will see that this sentence is used to compare what Christians do versus the OT temple sacrifices. The “altar” is a reference to a table of sacrifice. It is used as such here in the context of sacrifice, because that’s what an altar is––a table of sacrifice. Plus - what do we do at the altar of our sacrifice? We eat!
Paul compares the Eucharist to two other sacrifices: the temple sacrifice and pagan sacrifice. Without being explicit, Paul is saying that the Eucharist is a sacrifice, by strong implication.16
The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
17
Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.
18
Look at Israel according to the flesh; are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar?
19
So what am I saying? That meat sacrificed to idols is anything? Or that an idol is anything?
20
No, I mean that what they sacrifice, (they sacrifice) to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to become participants with demons.
21
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and also the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons.
