What is something you think should be mentioned in a homily but never is

Sin! What it is, how to avoid it, how much we all need confession; that even the Pope goes to confession.

!

yes, this is another thing… In this society, nothing is a sin anymore, to speak of… and even things most people think are wrong (aboriton?)… well… Silence can be interpreted as “no big deal… you can always be forgiven…” but a lot of women who have abortions, even when forgiven by Christ himself (& they accept it), can’t forgive themsleves… terrible consequences to that and other sins… Priests should have a storng desire to save people from sin… maybe they feel that since they (may ) not be commiting big sin, no one else is??? Yet some priests i have known … well, their sins are not all that hidden… (venial, mostly… )…

Purgatory… never mentioned…

yet most of us are headed there… (i think)…

there needs to be a focus on the terrible consequences of sin. As St. Faustina says in her Diary… even the smallest sin is not smal to God… I think that is one thing that is horribly wrong with the Protestant idea of Once Saved Always save.d. i wouldthink the Prot ‘s behavior wouldget worse & worse… since they don’t have to (thikn they have to) get all that junk washed off their souls. But they do. God is no respector of persons… Just because you dont’ believe in Purgatory doesn’t make it magically go away… (and just for you, of course… 😃 )… and the purification process is painful…

Indulgences. Haven’t heard ANY priest even mention the word. Have to surf the Net to find out what indulgences are.
Differences between men and women as God intended. That’s another one.

Looking through all of these posts, I can’t help but wonder how many of us must be fond of Fr. Corapi. 😃

I, too am reading the Holy Rule of St. Benedict, as I am in my novice year as a secular oblate, and I would truly like the homily to remind us all of the need for Eucharistic Adoration. Spending a hour in the Real Presence of Our Lord, in silence and hearing the Voice of the Beloved speak to us in our hearts. What a joy this has been to me, and I pray that others will come to know this also.

The graces found in attending daily Mass.

A confession “how-to” and invitation. Why “taking it straight to God” isn’t what Jesus intended.

Prayer.

The dignity of the priesthood, what priests need from the rest of us so they can minister to the best of their ability, how we can support them in their faith, etc.

Well…what I want to hear more of I do hear, very occasionally, but not nearly enough. I want to hear hard plugging for discipleship – what it means to follow Christ, how to do it, and so on and so forth. I want to hear enthusiastic coaching on discipleship. It should be nearly impossible to fall asleep during a sermon if it’s given with lots of charisma on the right topic. NO MORE READING FROM SCRIPTS. NO MORE RELIGIOUS BOOK REVIEWS!:crying:

Indulgences
Purgatory
the reality of hell
mortal vs veniel sin
how to deal with temptations
abortion
euthenasia
catholic version of obtaining salvation

I agree with most of the posters as to suggested topics for a really good homily.

I would also like the Priest to talk on the necessity for Confession on a regular basis, not just the once a year Easter Duty.

One must be a Saint to go a whole year without committing even a teeny little venial sin.

If one gets into the habit of going to Confession regularly one is always ready to be “called.” Sorry, had to say that.:harp: :heaven:

Huh??

i think the differences are so obvious it doesn’t need to be dealt with…

except to say they should stay away from each other… (nobody does that these days…)

yeah… everyone takes Communion but nobody lines up for the Confessional… (in many Churches this is the case)… must be a lot of unworthy Communions going on…

Or maybe we are all just SO holy… 😃

I know- but I think that could be solved if there was more teaching during the sermon! I really think we have a few generations of untaught Catholics out there!

Maybe not totally solved - after all there is Original Sin and concupiscence - but helped, maybe alot.
My continually growing list is (for now):
Capital Sins
Mortal Sins
regular Confession
Cafeteria Catholicism
chastity
role of successor of Peter in Church teaching
obedience
authority
abortion
euthanasia
sexuality and gender roles (according to HMC)

I keep thinking of more and I’ve never heard a homily more than touch briefly on any of these - some mention of Confession but never of sin!

I just wish the homily was longer. It strikes me that a few minutes a week isn’t nearly enough instruction for me. There’s only one English Mass a week near me, so that’s all I get.

Do you know what I’d love? I’d love to have a website where you could read or listen to the homilies from a variety of parishes around the world. Wouldn’t that be great? You could learn so much more that way.

No offense, Brigid, but I suspect your litany of topics might be viewed by young Catholics as a bit too negative. Inspiration is so vitally important in keeping any cause or belief system alive. We must inspire people to stay strong in the ways of God. Personally, I get tired of my fellow Catholics complaining about ‘Cafeteria Catholics’. My* first *thought is, “Mind your own business, please.” My second thought is, “Can your faith-life withstand close scrutiny? How can we know without prying where we shouldn’t?” I think accusing others of being ‘Cafeteria Catholics’ falls into the category of passing judgment on others, which we shouldn’t do. No offense. Didn’t mean to bark at you. Just offering my two cents with respect and reverence.🙂

Hi King Alfred:
IMO, I already think on most Sunday’s the homily is so watered down for that very reason that young (or any Catholic for that matter) don’t view the topics preached as negative. I don’t think it’s the Church’s responsibility to make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I think It’s responsibility is to make sure that we know right from wrong, what sin is and what we need to do to avoid it. It would probably be very eye opening for many parishioners to hear! (including myself) I really don’t care to hear about the priest’s golf game anymore. I’d much rather hear about abortion, contraception, gossiping, the sins of today, salvation and damnation, etc. We’ve heard the Truth hurts but I believe not knowing the truth does.

You know it now, and that’s great.👍

My choices would have to be:

The Real Presence… and…

Abortion, morality and life issues (contraception, etc.). The only place I seem to hear any discussion of this… is on EWTN. Or at this forum.
Amen

What surprises me about the dirth of “meaty” topics in the homily is that the priest is going to be answering to God for all the souls in his parish territory. Now, that’s a huge responsibility and it seems that a number of priests are tippy-toeing around (at least) the harder topics - if this were out in the rest of the world and from the appearances of the weekly bulletin, it seems in some cases to derive from concern for getting money (didn’t I read somewhere that the love of money was the root of all evil?). I realize that if a parish is truly not able to pay it’s light bill or heat or altar needs (and not because the money available has been diverted to a future building project) that a pastor’s concern for money could certainly have a basis in a concern for the souls in his care getting the sacraments. But

Oh, btw, I would add extra emphasis to Eucharistic Adoration!👍
