I have heard of this commemoration from my childhood and I find that no one seems to know what it is, or if it is a formal title for the Wednesday before Holy Thursday. Can you tell me anything about it?
So far as I know, Spy Wednesday was not an official name for the Wednesday of Holy Week (unlike, for example, Ash Wednesday, which has been the official name for the commemoration that begins Lent); rather, it was a pious nickname that called to mind that this is the day that the Church commemorates the betrayal of Christ by Judas Iscariot.
