What is the status of a baptized catholic who decides to receive ordination from a schismatic church i.e… old catholic church, is there anything written about this in the catechism or cannon law any articles would be helpful

The Church teaches that any formal act of heresy, apostasy, or schism merits an automatic excommunication. Since receiving ordination from a schismatic bishop would constitute an act of formal schism, it follows that such an individual would be excommunicated.

The key, however, is to distinguish between a group being in schism and being in an irregular state. For example, Eastern Orthodox churches are considered to be in a state of schism whereas the Society of St. Pius X (Society started by Archbishop Lefevre) are merely in an irregular state and not in schism.

Here is a great article explaining the relationship between schism and excommunication.
