If you speak the truth about somebodys bad doings or sins. I know it is a sin to do so…but why exactly? What is the official name of that sin?

Yes I am guilty of it.

Thanks

Are you talking about “detraction”? It’s only a sin if you have no good reason to tell.

Ahh.

Thanks. I thought I had a good reason at the time, but was also angry. I’m not sure…I sat on this information for a long time and told my mom. I thought she needed to know so she could pray for my brother. Her prayers are powerful!

Catechism:

2477 Respect for the reputation of persons forbids every attitude and word likely to cause them unjust injury. He becomes guilty:
  • of rash judgment who, even tacitly, assumes as true, without sufficient foundation, the moral fault of a neighbor;
  • of detraction who, without objectively valid reason, discloses another’s faults and failings to persons who did not know them;
  • of calumny who, by remarks contrary to the truth, harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgments concerning them.

I’ve actually been guilty of this a lot lately. Up until recently, I didn’t even know it was necessarily a sin despite what you say being the truth.
