What is the 4th Joyful Mystery of the Rosary?

Looking for responses especially from older members.
I see some intersting discrepancies recalling what my grandparents taught me as a child!
 
You mean the name of the Mystery?
Id say:

“The Presentation of Jesus at the Temple of Jerusalem”, or simply “The presentation of Jesus”.
 
The presentation of the child Jesus at the temple. (for respect for authority).

The Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple…This was when Jesus was “given” His name.
 
The mystery has always been the Presentation of the Child Jesus, as others have stated. Confusion may arise from the fact that the feast of the Presentation of Our Lord on the second of February is also the feast of the Purification of Our Lady, and was known by that name prior to 1970. In fact, the feast is both one of Our Lord (Presentation) and Our Lady (Purification), since both events happened during the same ceremony in the temple.

Surely that was on eighth day after birth, when He was circumcised? The Presentation/Purification took place on the 40th day.

See Luke, chapter one, verse 59.;’ and it befell on the eighth day they came for the circumcision of the child, and were for calling him by his father’s name, Zachary’, (speaking of the birth of John the Baptist).

And Luke, chapter two, verse 21: ‘and when eight days had been completed for the day of his circumcision, his name was called Jesus’.
Followed by verse 22. ‘And when the days of purification had been completed according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord’. Clearly a separate event. and related to the ritual uncleanness of the mother because of the blood loss that continues after childbirth.

Yes this is the confusion/conflation I am noticing pw.

My parents, following their parents (border of Germany/France) called it “The Circumcision of Jesus”.

Of course, as you say, this was a completely different event:
CIRCUMCISION
  • 8 days after birth
  • probably done by Joseph “at home” in Bethlehem (ie probably at a relative’s place which was too packed to accomodate them when they arrived on “Christmas day”.)
  • given the name “Jesus”
PRESENTATION/PURIFICATION
  • 40 days after birth
  • done in the Temple at Jerusalem
  • sacrificing of pigeons
  • the two prophets were present (Simeon and Anna)
  • also involved ritual purification of the mother
Has anyone else ever heard of it being given the name “Circumcision of Jesus.”

And the answer is that the 4th Joyful mystery has always referred to both The Cirumcision and the Presentation of Jesus, even though these two events are 32 days apart.

I knew they must be separate events (as you say, 8th vs 40th day after birth) but never seen or heard the remotest suggestion that the Mystery incorporates His circumcision.

I guess the Nativity has always, to me at least, incorporated the Adoration of the Magi even though they seem to have arrived some time after His birth (maybe as much as two years, given Herod’s order to kill children who were younger than two).
 
When I started saying the Rosary as a child many years ago I was taught by my German grandparents and it was The Circumcision.

LilyM I believe the Adoration of the Magi must have followed very closely the birth of Jesus.
Luke says that they left Bethlehem as soon as they had done all that the law required (i.e. Circumcision/Presentation). So they weren’t in Bethlehem for very long. The Magi defintely worshipped baby Jesus in Bethlehem.
