What is the appropriate care of cremains?

I am wondering if a Catholic can have their deceased person’s cremains separated and placed in different locations? Also, do they have to be placed in a sacred place (i.e., a cemetery or mausoleum) or can they just be buried in someone’s back yard or scattered over the sea? It doesn’t seem like reverent treatment to me but maybe that’s ok? Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut.
