What is the appropriate dress attire for Mass?

I think it’s true that God doesn’t care what you wear to Mass. My son, a street person, goes to Mass occasionly, he is not always clean, but he is there. I take a handicap lady to Mass, some days, her hair isn’t comb, other times she seems to have a bad odor about her, but she is there. Both of these people I sure God is tickled pink for their presence. Every once in awhile someone comes to Mass in attire that does not cover the body in good taste for attending the celebration of Mass. I’m just as sure the Lord is happy they are there but He probably doesn’t like sharing the "Center Stage. This lack of coverage may cause some members of the parish to have thoughts that would be better left outside the doors of the church.

I love the causal live-style of California, but sometimes a person needs to use a little common sense.

God Bless.

I strongly feel that if we can dress up for other occasions, we should offer the same respect for GOD. I have no problem with someone coming in looking dirty and haggard…it is probably the best they have and therefore they are doing better than some who have much more.

You should dress as if you were going to a wedding feast, because you are.

Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory. For the wedding day of the Lamb has come, his bride has made herself ready.
Rev 19:7

The minimum attire should be clean and modest. (Obviously if you’re a homeless person you can’t be particularly clean, but as far as I know my parish has no homeless folks.)

By modest I mean nothing low-cut or too short or skin tight. Proper undergarments would be a real plus. (One of our cantors does not wear a bra and that is why all cantors now wear choir robes.)

My 14-year-old son always wears a suit and tie (his own preference – I never told him to). When people ask him whether he is dressed for something special he always says, “Yes, for the greatest banquet of all!” That catches people off guard. I’ve noticed that his example has caused others to start dressing nicely, including his friends.

Surely God loves us just as we are, but it should behoove us to dress our best when we go to His banquet. Are our lives so busy that we can’t take a half hour before we leave for Mass to put on something nice, or at least something clean and untattered?
