What in your opinion, experience, or by virtue of expertise in the field of nutrition or medicine, is the optimal diet for human health. they only allow 4 choices, so if this poll thing works, choices will be 1. starch centered (McDougall) 2. meat centered (Atkins) 3. balanced protein/carb/fat within strict limits (Zone) or 4. fruit & vegetable centered allowing small amounts of concentrated protein from animal or plant sources (Pritikin or Ornish would come closest, I think)

Eat what your hungry for.

Listen to your body, it’s smarter than you.

Yup!

Everyone’s optimal diet is going to be different. I personally thrive on a high complex-carb diet (similar to the McDougall plan in the poll). I could live on beans, grains, fresh produce and some dairy and be quite happy and healthy. However- my husband is a carnivore. If he goes for more than a couple of days without meat, he starts having digestive problems. Unfortunately the same is true for me if I eat meat for more than a couple of days in a row! It’s been interesting trying to work out our dietary schedules, but we’ve pretty much got it down to poultry and fish a few nights a week and veggie the rest of the time (if he wants a steak we can go to a restaurant, since I can’t eat that stuff).

Atkins actually helped with my myasthenia gravis, but it’s too hard to stay on. Personally, I think sensibility/moderation is the answer.

I’m still working on that, though. 😃

I lost the most weight on fruits and veggies and portion control. Now that I have an ulcer, this type of diet irritates it. 4 or 5 small meals a day works better.

God bless,

The ONLY ones qualified to answer with any certainty are those 100 years or older. Those that I know have a distinctively thin profile.(Lack of body fat)

Hmmm! It’s hard to vote when you left out the sugar and fast food diet. It’s the best and so much more appetizing! Just three small meals a day!😃

None of the above.

For me WeightWatchers has been the most sensible. I can eat ANYTHING I want. It teaches me how to make SMART food choices and I’ve learned portion control. So far I’ve lost 40 lbs… 👍

(e) All of the aboveAfter my son had treatment for leukaemia, I was desperate for a way to keep him healthy and searched the internet for a healthy eating plan. I did a google search for ‘Jesus cures cancer’, hoping that I would be lead to the right site, it was in doing this I found out about ‘metabolic typing’ through Mercola.com. Basically what is the right balance of carbs/protein/fat for one person is not the same as for another and this is why some people will thrive on one diet while others do not.

I have to add my 2 cents to this one.

it depends on many things about who the diet is for. both me and my mother are hypoglycemic, me moderately, my mother to a nasty extreme. carbs and simple sugars dont help keep bloodsugar balanced. it would spike up then drop off a cliff. for us 2 protien keeps it in balance which keeps us functionable. on a work day if I have too late or miss either of my first 2 meals, Im worthless. missing meals sets off a migraine for my mother.
my wife doesnt eat near as much meat as I do, and eats more vegies than I do by lightyears and has cholesterol of 260, while mine is near 180, and her gallbladder came out few moths ago.so I dont put much faith in diet extending life span.

The reason I was so sold on Metabolic Typing is from personal experience, when my son was in hospital I stayed in the room with him and ate either the meals provided by the hospital when he wasn’t able to or chose not to eat them, or food from the canteen. I could not understand why, when I was in the middle of the most stressful period of my life, I felt so physically great, several aches and pains had disappeared and I lost the excess weight I was carrying (even though I was eating quite hearty meals) When I read the Metabolic Typing book, I realised I was actually following the diet principles and this is why I felt so healthy. Our cells are programed for health but they need the right fuel.

ps. Did you know that the healthy food pyramid that everyone holds up as the perfectly balanced diet was actually developed by the U.S Dept. of Agriculture? Wonder why it advocates such a large proportion of grains?? :hmmm:

pps. Remember that when a food manufacturer develops a new ‘food’ to market, his/her basic aim is to make money, not to provide the most nutritious food to the public. (This is why there are so many corn-based products on the market)

so how do you figure out your metabolic type? trial and error?

Although I have voted for the Zone diet I do not believe in any of these magical diets. I agree that the Weight Watchers approach to weight loss is the most sensible.

I have been to see a Dietician in order to reduce my weight. I have a few flaws in my eating pattern, but my husband’s habits are my worst problem. In order to lose weight and to maintain health you need to optimize everything that you are eating. Too much carbohyrate in the diet could lead to Type II diabetes because the body might not be able to handle the insulin surges. When there is too much carbohydrate being consumed the extra is stored as fat by the body. Meat is a necessary part of the diet, but too much is also bad for one’s health. We do need some sugars, but the best source is fruit.

The optimal diet is to take into account one’s needs on a daily basis, then divide the intake into about 5 small meals per day. It is best to include all of the food groups but there is also a requirement for moderation.

Moderation in all things is the key to good health.

As quoted from a coroner who sees bodies opened up, all their organs and their size, “the problem with humans, is not what they eat but how much they eat.” This is THE cause of many health problems including overweight. I agree fully with it!!! Why do you think the French women are so thin? Look at the portions in a French restaurant! About a third of what we’re used to eating!!!

So…THE best optimal diet of any is eat anything and everything but mind the quantity, quantity------half the portion size Americans are used to.!!! I know it’s so hard though-----I’m trying to be more aware of this myself this year for good health’s sake!!!

Good Luck!!!

This is so true…I’ve tried every diet that comes down the pike…South Beach and Atkins were good to get me going…but I can’t stay on them… I like good food!

The Metabolic Typing Book has quite an extensive questionaire to help you work it out, Dr Mercola might have it on his web site too, not sure. There are also basic principals like avoiding highly processed food, drinking lots of water and adding raw vegetables to your diet. It just makes such sense. I don’t follow the diet strictly by I do know when I’m not following it closely enough, my aches return and I don’t have nearly as much energy.:dancing:

How about just eating pretty much what you want, and just maintain eating fruits and veggies with? And watch how much sugar you eat…sugar is one of the biggest reasons for weight gain. If not used in exercise, it turns straight to fat!!! And make sure to exercise to keep your lungs, heart, and body healthy…

the best way to achieve optimal health is through EXERCISE. A bad diet can be made up for through exercise. but exercise can’t be made up for through a good diet.
you can eat the twinkie, mcdonald french fry and mountain dew diet if your working out regularly at a sufficient intensity.
the body was designed to move.
SO MOVE.
