What is the best internet filter for adults?

Hi there everyone,

My friend needs help overcoming the temptation of porn and has voluntarily asked me to put a filter on his computer to help him overcome moments of weakness. Being that there are always holes in these types of filters I need to know which is the best. Money is not a big issue here. So which filters cannot be bypassed by proxy servers, and which can possibly monitor all downloads as well? He uses internet sharing for music etc, so that is something that needs to be monitored without me physically going to his house and looking at his downloads. Even if I need to do some sort of combination that would be fine as well. The point here is to make it as difficult as possible and to give him as MUCH time as possible to think and pray about his impulses.

Hands down, I believe that the best filter out there is OpenDNS. It allows you to administer traffic remotely, so you don’t have to worry about going over to your friends house in order to make adjustments if necessary.

It will also give you the ability to block as well as allow certain sites through matching urls. I have been using it for years now and I continue to be impressed.

Did I mention that it was free…?

How difficult will this be to install , should I install on windows or should I install it on the modem? and can they bypass this with proxy servers? How about downloads on file sharing networks can it filter that? Would it be wise to use opendns AND another internet filter, say safe eyes (that has been appealing). Sorry I have so many questions so any and all advice you give me would be great!

With OpenDNS, there is no install. That, you shouldn’t have to worry about. The way that I use it, is that I have a wireless router at home. All I had to do, after creating a user account inside of OpenDNS, is point my router to the OpenDNS name server, and it started to work.

I am not entirely sure. With my understanding on the way that proxy servers work, so long as the proxy server is behind the router, content should be filtered appropriately. In other words, since the proxy server has to access the internet through the router and the router is only allowed content specified by the OpenDNS setup, then the proxy server should not be able to retrieve content that is deemed inappropriate.

How about downloads on file sharing networks can it filter that?

Great question. I don’t think I have an answer for it. I am going to have to refer you to the OpenDNS Support

From my experience, OpenDNS has completely met my needs. I haven’t had any reason to use an additional product in order to keep the trash out of my home.
