What is the best way to explain Tradition to a non-Catholic?

I have tried to explain Tradition to my non-Catholic boyfriend, but I don’t seem to be able to explain in a way he understands. He has even said something about the Pope being to change Tradition after I had tried to enlighten him on the subject. Apparently I’m not making myself clear.
