Thank you, Della and zz912. Those descriptions and analogies help me better understand the points you are conveying.

Another aspect of the Ark was it’s composition. It was made of a desert tree, common in the area, denoting Mary’s humanity and humility, but overlaid with pure gold, denoting the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit. As the Ark was commanded by God to be made of that tree and overlaid with gold, so he formed Mary to be perfect to conceive the very Son of God, prefigured by the books of the Law. Unlike the Ark, though Mary conceived Jesus in her womb, he wasn’t merely placed there. Jesus took his humanity from his mother making her truly the Mother of God in that he was fully divine when he took his humanity from her.
There is also the blatant comparison that Luke’s Gospel makes between Mary and the Ark.
  1. Both held the bread/Bread of God.
  2. The Ark held the high priest Aaron’s staff, Mary held the High Priest
  3. The Ark held the 10 Commandments, Mary held the Word of God.
  4. David leapt before the Ark, John the Baptist leapt when Mary spoke.
  5. The Ark stayed in the hill country for 3 months, Mary stayed with Elizabeth (who lived in the hill country).
  6. The glory of the Lord overshadowed the Ark, the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary
  7. David says “how can the ark of the Lord come to me?”. Elizabeth says “Why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
  8. Eventually the Ark is moved to its rightful place in the Temple, and Mary presents God Himself in the Temple at the Presentation.

Evangelicals would say the same about Mary, that she was a willing instrument used by God to bring Christ into the world and is a key part of salvation history. There would not have been an incarnation without her, so she has a special role.

I just don’t understand why it is so important that she had to be sinless. She even called Jesus her Savior. Why would she need a savior if she never sinned?
As someone else mentioned once you learn the typology of the old testament ark of the covenant it is easy to understand that she didn’t need to be sinless but why it was fitting that she was sinless.

As for the Jesus was her Savior she needed a savior because she was human just like us and we all need a savior. Now for the difference between us and her. John 1:1-3 says:
The Word Became Flesh
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.[a] 2 He was in the beginning with God; 3 all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.

Basically this tells us that the divine nature of Jesus’ was present from the beginning. Where as Jesus’ human nature was present from the moment of conception.

So knowing that Jesus’ divine nature was present prior to Mary’s birth we as Catholics believe Jesus’ saved her prior to her being immaculately conceived. the best explanation I ever heard goes like this. There is more than one way to save someone from death. If you were walking next to a cliff and I knew you were going to fall of and die I would have 2 options. I could either catch you after you fall or I could pull you back from the edge of the cliff and never give you the chance to fall. Basically, we all fell of the cliff and Jesus caught us on the way down. Mary was pulled back from the edge of the cliff and saved by Jesus when he created her spirit at conception.

I can try to find the talk I listened to on the ark of the covenant, if you are interested just let me know.

FOUND IT 👍

This video sums it all up. Say a pray to Jesus to open your mind and your heart and then sit quietly for 12 minutes and watch this video.

This video is a must see for both Catholics and non-Catholics. It blows my mind every time I watch it. The Bible truly is the greatest story ever told.:amen:

Thanks, MT1926. I just viewed it. It was very nice. I especially liked the scripture references and the comparison of Old and New Testament verses to make the points.

By the way, is today your father’s surgery? I hope and pray all goes well for him.

Thank you Tommy. You brought a tear to my eye for remembering.

He is in recovery now, the surgeon said all went well. Now we just need to keep praying he heals inside this time.

Keep up the prayers, we’re still gonna need em.
