Greetings,
I am curious, I am an Old Catholic priest that belongs to a moderately progressive jurisdiction, basically we have a much more Anglican approach towards liturgy and prayer. I personally am very conservative in terms of liturgy(my wife and I use the 1928 Book of Common Prayer). I work, I am married and I am the rector of a mission church and volunteer as a Hospice Chaplain-just a little busy:). I have read where Blessed John Paul II affirmed the Orders of the Old Catholic Church. I have had nothing but hostility when dealing with RC priests.
When I introduce myself to avoid confusion, I simply say that I am Anglo-Catholic. Just it seems to me that our One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church is not confined to Rome. I firmly believe that within that umbrella are the Orthodox, many of the Oriental Orthodox, Old Catholic, Trentine and others. Why the hostility? I try to be ecumenical and respectful and during Divine Liturgy I pray for the Holy Father as well the Ecumenical Patriarch but it seems that when I introduce myself to a RC priest as an Old Catholic they are rude and insulting, whereas I know many Anglican priests and they always greet me with a Christian smile and hospitality. I understand the history of the Old Catholic and Anglicans, we have communion with them.
I suppose my question is, why is there so much open hostility to Old Catholics? I know that some have, like the Episcopalians have completely left Orthodoxy and have allowed the ordination of homosexuals and allowed other things that are contrary to the RC Canon Law but I see the same RC priest meet a Pentecostal minister and they greet them as if they are golden when in fact they don’t believe in the Catholicity of the Church, they do NOT have apostolic lineage, they don’t believe in the Sacraments, etc.?
Thank you for your time, God be with you in all that you do. I pray for His Holiness Francis I that ecumenism is on his agenda–it is scandalous how shattered the body of Christ is…
In the Risen Christ!

Dear Fr. Patrick
I am sorry that you have met with hostility from some Catholic priests. I hope that your future relations with the Catholic Church are more fulfilling. The Catholic Church desires unity with all other Christians, as the Decree on Ecumenism of the Second Vatican Council and Blessed John Paul II’s encyclical letter Ut Unum Sint proposes. I would suggest that you consult those documents. I would also add, however, that the Catholic Church understands herself to be the one true Church founded by Christ, with all the means of salvation subsisting in her. She is close to other Christians, but where full communion does not exist, we cannot gloss over the differences. The best reference for the official teaching of the Catholic Church in this regard is the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Allow me to also recommend a particular apostolate of the Catholic Church to non-Catholic clergy: The Coming Home Network (www.http://chnetwork.org ). The Coming Home Network should be able to put you in contact with a friendly Catholic priest in your area, no commitment required.
