What is the Catholic Church's position toward Muslims?

I teach a Confirmation class composed of 10th and 11th graders. This is their second year of a two year program so they have some foundation in the faith. I want to teach them the basics about Islam and outline the Catholic Church’s position towards it. How do we understand Islam? They are not our separated bretheren like the protestants but I seem to recall that the pope may have called them our “cousins.” If you could just point me in the right direction and suggest some resources I could read that would be wonderful.

In discussing the Church and non-Christians, here is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) says about the Church’s relationship with the Muslims: “The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day” (CCC 841).
