What is the Catholic church's viewpoint about evolution?

I believe in what the Bible says, that God created Adam and Eve in his image. I don’t believe in the idea that man evolved from apes or other organisms (in that case God must really be an ape coz he created Adam in his image, haha!). But scientists claim to have evidence for the theory of evolution. Is this evidence true? Or are they making false claims?
