Many Protestants take literally John 14:6 “No one can come before the Father except by me”.
St. Francis de Sales commented on this verse in that ‘we must imitate’ Christ and follow his example.
However, some Protestants use this verse to justify that salvation is not possible unless they accept Jesus Christ in their lives.
I read a good Catholic tract that addresses this:

**How can I explain this verse from a Catholic perspective, and at the same time address the possibility of salvation outside the Church (as noted in the Catechism)? **
I know the natural law is written on everyone’s heart, and the Church recognizes truth and holiness in other beliefs.
Protestants emphasize that even though a person is good they cannot obtain heaven unless they are Christian.
Do we Catholics believe salvation is possible outside the Church because of our beliefs in Purgatory, Redemptive Sufferring, and Atonement of Sin (e.g. 2 Maccabees 12:46)?
