What is the Church's official teaching on animals after death?

My ten year old son frequently asks where animals go after they die. I do not want to say that they are 'souless" therefore do not enter heaven. All of God’s creation is good and I want to give animals their rightful merit for the beauty, joy, and service that they provide. However, I do want to instruct my son according to Catholic teaching. Please advise.
