In the story of the beggar Lazarus, Abraham’s comment that “nor can anyone cross from there(hell) to us” suggests to me that prayers them would no longer be effective for their cause of getting to heaven.
And yet in the second secret given at Fatima, our Lady, after showing hell to the children says " to save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart."
This suggests to me that, prayers for the souls are necessary and indeed effective.
So, what is the Church’s position on prayer for souls in hell?
