What is the church's teaching on cremation?

What is the church’s teaching on cremation? Must ashes of the deceased be interred in holy ground? I know of someone who lost their father and have his ashes in their bedroom closet and want to say something but need to know the best way to approach it. They are non-practicing Catholics.
