What is the church's teaching on evolution?

Dear Sir/Madam,

I posed this question to RCSpiritualdirection.com and they referred me to your site.

From discussion with other Catholics, including one who conducts RCIA course at my parish, I have gathered that the Church does not have any objection to evolution. I’ve even heard a quotation attributed to the previous Pope (Benedict) that indicates it (the Church) believes it as true. What is the Church’s official position on evolution?
