What is the Church's teaching on other intelligent life in the universe?

What is the Church’s teaching on other intelligent life in the universe.

I am writing a novel (science fiction) but I want it to be as true to the Church’s teachings as possible. I haven’t been able to find much information on this topic other than some opinions from some Vatican astronomers. So far as I can tell, there is no specific teaching on if there is other intelligent life in the universe. If that is the case, than am I still within church teaching to assume that there is as long as I portray them as part of God’s creation and as part of the bigger plan for us?
