It is a steroid that blocks progesterone, a hormone needed for a pregnancy to continue. It can be used in the first two months of pregnancy to abort an embryo. It cause the embryo to detach from the uterus. A second pill is taken the following day that induces contractions and the discharge of the embryo.

first drug: mifepristone - causes the detachment of the embryo
second drug: misoprostol - induces contractions
third drug: gemeprost - treatment of obstetric bleeding

As far as what it is used for - the intent is that it is used in the case of unprotected intercourse, rape, or failed contraception (broken condom, etc.).

This is not what is often called the morning-after pill. The morning-after pill, or emergency contraception, is a high dose of hormones found in regular hormonal contraceptives. This can be either a progestin-only or combined estrogen and progestin dose (the former being the more common, I believe). Since these drugs act before implantation, they are considered contraceptives.

Mifepristone is rarely used as an emergency contraceptive in the U.S.

Even if the embryo has not yet implanted does not make it any less a human life. It still cauesed the death of a life.

I think RebeccaJ has the morning-after pill confused with RU486.

The morning-after pill is like a super-big dose of regular birth control pills. The intent is to stop ovulation from happening if it is about to, after a rape or an act of unprotected sex. However, as with regular use of birth control pills, it also disrupts the lining of the uterus and can make it impossible for an already-conceived embryo to implant in the uterine wall, causing its death.
