Is it a seasonal thing around here or what? Seems there is rash of threads putting down the CCR. From some posts one would think they are forgetting these people are CATHOLICS too!

Good point Eilish, it seems possible that some think only that the hand is an apropriate part of the body and the foot not!

I do not bash the CCR, but I am a little bit turned-off by it personally and a little suspicious of it. For one, it’s just not my style at all (I did not become a Catholic to worship in this manner); second, out of all of the newer movements in the Church, it seems to me to be especially susceptible to theological error (of an Evangelical Protestant sort).

That said, I know of many very holy, orthodox Catholics who are a part of it and who swear by it, and I am fully conscious that charismatic movements in the Church are often criticized and deemed suspicious when they first sprout up, only to, hundreds of years later, seem like part of the very fabric of tradition. Look at the Franciscans and the Dominicans – many Catholics, many in high places in the Church, didn’t think very highly of those communities at all when they started out and picked up steam.

So, I am kind of skeptical, as is natural and commonplace historically… but also hopeful that I am the one who is being silly in feeling this way. :whacky:

I’m not sure I understand what the big fuss is either 🤷 I remember once Fr. Serpa on here recommended to me to get involved with a charismatic group. He suggested this through a PM as I had sent him a PM asking him a question. We have a group in our parish although I haven’t had the time to join and I’m not sure I would even like it 🤷 🙂

More than likely, many on here don’t like it because it is probably too Protestant for them. We have some fairly paranoid far right Catholics on here who are horrified at anything that even comes close to Protestants. Just my own opinion, I could be wrong 😊 😃

Interesting …

Friday’s first reading is good to reflect upon:
"So now I tell you,
have nothing to do with these men, and let them go.
For if this endeavor or this activity is of human origin,
it will destroy itself.
But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them;
you may even find yourselves fighting against God
.”
If those who arrogantly pass judgment on a movement of God believe their words have credence and their judgments please God, let them rethink in light of this scripture.

Let them keep their peace and not presume to teach the entire Body of Christ in opposition to Church pronouncements.

As an afterthought, this thread was moved from Liturgy & Sacraments. We’re not too likely to hear from these grumblers in Spirituality. 😛

Oh my gosh! I mixed it up with the one started by “lepanto” on April 4th in L&S and was moved here. My apologies. Thanks for correcting that.

After it was moved, they never came back.

I know a person, who has been heavily influenced by the traditionalists of late, who happened to mention that the name of Jesus is used way too much nowadays, and too casually. She blames this on the charismatic renewal, implying that the charismatics are to blame for this general irreverence to Christ.

The people who, I believe, put this thought in her head have a tendency to equate the charismatics with liberal factions of the Church and Protestants. Everything is black and white with them. They are unable to discern differences. Any belief or practice that they disapprove of is authomatically a condemnable one. I do not understand how these people end up so narrow-minded.

I’ve noticed that people who bash the Charismatic Movement, generally have little understanding of Contemplative Prayer as well. They know how to say the Rosary and other prayers, but anything beyond discursive prayer, is beyond their understanding and so they feel its their Catholic obligation to reject it…

If God feeds you through the Charismatic Movement, who are they to tell you he doesn’t?

Don’t let them discourage you.

In Christ
Jim

When I think of authentic Catholic charasmatics I think of Fr. Scanlon, TOR(U of Steubenville), Ralph Martin, & Sister Anne Shields. And there is Patti Gallagher Mansfield, who was one who attended the spirit filled week end @ Duquesne U. in the 60’s

I am a little skeptical about certain aspects of the Charasmatic renewal but I am not going to knock it down. If I worry about it I just pray on it and about it and for it.

God is so powerful that even if the renewal was bad he could make good come of it. With that being said who am I to know if the whole renewal isn’t part of His plan? And so I pray.

I think that when people bash it and rip it apart (acting out against their own brothers and sisters within their own church) they are acting out against the Church itself because the renewal is part of the Church. If it wasn’t part of the Church they wouldn’t be meeting to review the Charisms as per the other posters article.

There will always be ‘bad’ or ‘mislead’ Catholics who will be part of the renewal or part of the regular Church. If we don’t like something they are doing we should pray for them. God always answers prayers. But I think everyone needs to remember there could be a higher purpose for all of this. Perhaps God wants us all to talk about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit???

I do not understand what is supposed to be so bad about the charismatic movement. I know some of the old-timers take more liberties than they should. ( Only a commisioned priest can perform exorcisms, for instance.) But that has more to do with the loose spirit of the 60’s, I think, than the movement itself.

The charismatics I have met are more in line with the Magisterium than are those of the traditional bent. The spirit of rebellion is not in the former, though some can be a little overly emotional than what is prudent. To me, that is far better than the dour, holier-than-thou-attitude that seems to inevitably creep over those that listen to the latter. Division, confusion and ill-will towards others is not from the Holy Spirit.

I have stopped listening to the pontificating of the traditionalists and begun clinging to the Magisterium. It is far more balanced than any particular movement. That is the key, I think. Balance.

Because some people feel good when they attempt to make others feel bad. It’s a thing. I am sure you see it in other areas of life, at work maybe? Maybe others seriously think the CCR is a bad thing and they are just expressing their seriously well thought out opinions.

Me? I’m a card carrying Charismaniac 😃 Wanna see my laminated membership card? 😛

I can understand why there would be such opposition for three reasons: 1. people tend to fear the unknown
2. some charismatic renewal advocates have been active in liturgical abuses or other fanaticism, and since they were the visible ones it began to be associated with the movement itself by more “conservitive sectors”
3. it is unquantifiable- you can’t measure or control or examine it (b/c a true charism is the work of the Holy Spirit), and so it may sometimes become a control issue in some places where a pastor or church minister isn’t familiar with these things.
  • ironically, the people who “bash” the charisms are also charismatic themselves. a charism is simply a gift that God gives someone, regardless or thier sanctity, in order to build the Church. authority, administration, catechising, and the like are all charisms. everyone has some degree of them if they are involved in the Church or even basic spirituality in thier parish. if all a person does is go to mass on sunday and raise ther children to know God and the Catholic Faith- that in itself it a charism.

I don’t think there is anything bad about the renewal I was just saying that if I did I would pray about it. I don’t feel the need to bash it or correct anyone. - that is what I was trying to say, sorry if that wasn’t clear.

People do get really riled up about it. I am willing to bet the same kinds of reactions happened when Jesus performed miracles. It was heated and unbelievable for most people because it wasn’t normal.

Hey all, the Renewal really changed my heart, I just wanna mantion that. For anyone who is not sure if they will be blessed in it, I encourage you to try! What happened to me is here in my testimony:

I had first heard about the CCR and tongues, and at first, I was neutral to it. I wasn’t sure. But in time, after looking into what the church was saying, I began to believe it was truly from God, and then had a strong desire to receive it from our Lord.

So after the aforesaid things happened to me, I happened to meet a woman just a few days after this desire for the gift of tongues came to me. We had always prayed together at mass but we did not know each other at all. We only prayed together. So this day, she starts to talk to me after the mass. And it turns out that I was going through a rough time then, I told her that and this kind woman said that if I was going to be at mass the next day, she would bring me a book to read to help me with my struggles.

She did the next day and as we talked a little bit, she looked at me and asked if I might be willing to go to a charismatic prayer night. Wow, how did she know that I was reading about this stuff?? Not a coincidence… Ane well, Of course I said yes I would go.

Well when we got there, people were just going up one by one and introducing themselves and sharing a little about what the Lord had done in their lives. They asked me to do the same and I shared a testimony about how I first came to believe in God. They said “thank you brother, amen. The Lord is indeed with you.”

and then the meeting was over! !!! well as we were getting ready to leave, An older man and woman were talking with me. They were so delightful! Very nice people. And as my friend and I were just about to leave, the man (who it turns out was the prayer group leader) said to me “Hey wait a minute, did you want to receive the gift of tongues?” !!!

“Yeah I do” I replied. So he just calls out to everyone who were already literally going out the door “Hey hold on everyone, we are going to pray for our brother to receive the gift of tongues.” So they all came back in the church for me. wow

And what happened next I will never forget: I sat there and the man led me in a prayer to turn my life over to Jesus completely and to ask Him to fill me with His holy Spirit. All this while about 20 mature members of the charismatic renewal (most with probably 20 years under their belt) prayed with hands outstretched towards me in tongues. It was unbelievably awesome. I was being filled with the Spirit in a way I did not comprehend but afterwards my friend asked me how I felt. And my only answer was “I feel so good, I feel like I am a new person. I have never felt this way before.”

And indeed, I was changed that day, for the Glory of God.

I didn’t mention that during the time that the group was praying over me, and after the leader had led me in a prayer of renewing my relationship with Jesus, he also led me in a prayer to receive the gift of tongues.

Now this prayer was very different. Not different in that I asked the Lord to give me something (that is natural for us catholics, we really know about the prayer of petition) but the difference came in what happened in the next part of the prayer.

He asked me if I would just try to speak in tongues. The leader wanted me to simply repeat the sounds that he was making as he prayer in tongues, sitting there next to me. Well it is so incredible because although the sounds he made were as simple as “la la” and “abba”, and although I opened my mouth to copy him, my voice was someone nearly non-existant when I tried to copy him. It was remarkable I must say. He kept asking me to speak out the sounds but LOL I couldn’t just barely make an audible note. wow. but just wait till what happened later.

So That was it, the prayers were over and we went home. I told my friend that I felt like a brand new person, like anything like I had ever felt, I had all of this love inside of me, I must have been beaming at everyone. I was full of God!!! (who is love).

I told her honestly though that I wasn’t sure if I had received the gift of tongues as all I was doing was copying the sounds that he made. The leader did ask me to let the gift flow out of me, lol but I could barely speak, let alone flow.

So. five days later. I was at a prayer group that I normally went to, it was non-charismatic and was being led by nuns. We were in a chapel in the presence of the blessed sacrament. So, these are young nuns who preach. A really miraculous order called Verbum Dei. But as I mentioned, they do not exhibit any of the charismatic gifts listed in 1 Cor 12. They do preach wonderfully though. Why do I mention this? Because it was there as this holy nun preached about giving my life to the Lord completely, that as she spoke, I prayed in my heart “Yes Jesus, yes. I want to give myself to you completely” That all of a sudden:

This fire began burning in my chest. A fire fire FIRE! and it was like I could see these flames there in my heart just filling my heart up big time. And then, I can’t explain how I could see this, but I did spiritually I believe, this fire was burning from my heart into my throat and mouth. And I knew these words were in the fire. I could even see them somehow. wow I know this sounds like something else but it really happened. So these wrods just started to flow out of my mouth. Really flow. So much that I had to hold my mouth shut because we were in chapel and this nun was preaching.

I kept quiet and was able to hold back from making any noise, but inside: I was praying in tongues, I knew not what, as my heart burned with the love of saying yes to my Lord.
