What is the deal with Youth ministers?

I’m sure the answer lies in their educational formation. We have an orthodox parish, but the youth ministers have been liberal. In fact, our current youth minister compared going to Confession to going to the bathroom. There’s a good analogy to present to young people!
Maybe I’m just cracked but i don’t see what’s wrong with that?? We all have to do both of these things to get of harmful things and waste. 1) sin is harmful to our souls 2) the poisons filtered out during urination could kill us if we don’t go potty 🤷🤷

Hello all,
Archdiocese of Los Angeles preferred requirements for youth minister is Basic formation (40 hours) plus special youth oriented classes from archdiocese (20 hours). (If in Los Angeles I would highly suggest to take the specialization classes. They were so informative).

Our parish youth group is called Cristo Joven.
The primary focus of the youth group is “community of faith”. As such we do everything together.

Weekly regular meeting includes scripture, topics, ice breakers, and activities.
Weekly Activity night we play sports or help around church.
We go on regular Pro-life walks and pray at abortion clinics.
We work/fundraise a lot. The youth actually love working together. As a group was made our parish over 10k in 2008. Very poor church so all volunteer. No stipend either.
We do fun stuff like Magic Mountain, Youth Day, hiking, and camping.
The kids are from all sorts of back grounds. We have a number of non-Catholics and one Jew. Many of the youth also participate in Confirmation and in mass.

Youth group and Confirmation are two different entities in my parish. Others combine them so they can pay one person to run it all. We have nuns run Religious education.

We are working right now on the confirmation retreat, Via Crusis (Way of the cross we perform on the streets around neighborhood on God Friday), and sports tournament (we invite close by parishes for some friendly competition).

We have a website www.CristoJoven.net

God Bless,
John Anthony

Attracting youth (both middle and high schoolers) in Church activities is a challenge in todays entertainment driven society.

In my opinion, we need to give them something to get them to want to come and bring their friends - friends are everything at that age. The old classroom only paradigm just won’t work today

If you want to see what other churches are doing to attract young people check out the link below

youtube.com/watch?v=po5NMKh1QjU

If the link doesn’t work for any reason type in Kidsstuff northpoint church.in your browser Programs like this are powerful - they do attract youth. It does work, I know that for a fact because I have been there!!!

Just change the script to provide Cathechisis (hea you probably could do a whole RCIA program) under this type of “entertainment umbrella”

If Catholic parishes really want to reach out an attract others to Christ - might I suggest you give it a try

Just a thought

Ron
