What is the difference between a Catholic and a Christian?

I have always considered myself a Catholic, but have wondered lately what were the differences between being a Catholic and being a Christian. I did some research but it didn’t help much, so I thought I’d try asking here.

A Catholic is a Christian. Usually when there is a distinction noted between the two, the person doing so is assuming that a Christian is a Protestant. While Protestants are Christians, they are not exclusively so. All who are validly baptized and follow Christ are properly called Christians.
