What’s the difference between a pagan, an atheist, and an agnostic? No, this is not the start of a bad joke. I was just never sure of the distinction.

An atheist is someone who does not believe in the existence of God. An agnostic is someone who doubts the existence of God. The word *pagan *has several meanings. It can refer to someone who is a polytheist (i.e., believes in many gods); to someone who belongs to one of the neo-pagan earth-based religions (e.g., Wicca); to someone who has no religion (as opposed to an atheist who positively believes that there is no God); or to a hedonist (i.e., someone whose primary pursuit is personal pleasure).
