What is the difference between being religious and being spiritual?

Someone recently commented that he is not religious but he is spiritual. What is the difference between being religious and being spiritual?
 
I can only guess, but I suspect this person means that he doesn’t belong to an organized religion but still feels “connected” to God. That is a misunderstanding of the word “religious.” The very word, based on its roots, means to be bound to God. In reality, it is not possible to be spiritual without also being religious.
